Softball Takes Early Lead, But Can't Stave Off Penguins Comeback in Series Opener

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies fell to Youngstown State University 9-3 on Friday at OU Softball Field as they kicked off their final regular season series.

Oakland scored in three consecutive innings to start the game, but was ultimately outmatched by a flurry of runs by Youngstown State in the latter stages of the game.

Oakland opened the scoring in the second inning when Taylor Carraway reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single by Kam Troyer, making it 1-0.

In the third inning, Brooklyn Plitz scored after reaching third base, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Autumn Liebhauser, extending Oakland's lead to 2-0.

Oakland added another run in the fourth inning. Carraway singled and scored on a single by Plitz, bringing the score to 3-1 as Oakland found success at the plate early on.

YSU would respond after a scoreless fifth on both sides, taking the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run homer by Emma Gilkerson, followed by an RBI double, turning the score to 4-3 in its favor.

In the seventh inning, the Penguins secured the win with a three-run homer, once again by Gilkerson, and a two-run triple, ending the game with a final score of 9-3 in favor of YSU.
