DETROIT, Mich. – Wrapping up non-conference play on Saturday afternoon, the Golden Grizzlies earned a 5-2 victory over Wayne State at the Duchene Athletic Facility.
Oakland (5-8, 1-0 HL) took two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point against Wayne State (3-5, 1-0 GLIAC). Sophomore Nisa Bulut and freshman Oliwia Klimas posted a 6-2 win on the No. 2 court, while senior Tara Montreuil and sophomore Martyna Piechowicz matched that score on the No. 3 court. Juniors Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen fell 6-2 to the Warriors' top doubles team of Martyna Szpakowska and Justine Beaulieu on the No. 1 court.
In singles, Oakland captured four matches to secure the overall victory. Montreuil (6-1, 6-2) and Klimas (6-3, 6-1) notched straight-set wins, while Bulut battled through three sets to defeat No. 45 Szpakowska, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Jarvinen led 5-4 the first set before her opponent retired due to injury, giving Oakland another point. Piechowicz dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision on the No. 1 court to Malak Arafat, who is currently ranked No. 35 in Division II women's tennis. Hammond pushed her match to a deciding third set and forced extra points in the opener, but ultimately fell to Beaulieu, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4.
The win gives Oakland its first streak of the season, as the Golden Grizzlies have now gone 2-0 in their last two matches, while Wayne State has dropped four straight after opening the season 3-1. Oakland also snapped its losing skid against the Warriors, as Wayne State had won the previous five meetings.
