ROSEMONT, Ill. - Oakland opened their season with a decisive rout of Western Illinois University 12-0 at Rosemont Dome on Friday night, as the teams played their opening games of the DePaul Dome Tournament. This victory marked Oakland's largest margin of victory since they defeated Youngstown State 10-0 on April 26, 2025, marking a decisive way to start the 2026 spring campaign.
Oakland's offense was highlighted by a
Kayla Turmell home run and a
Maggie Murphy triple, contributing to an 11-hit performance.
Oakland began the game with a strong first inning, scoring four runs.
Addison Kopp and Kam Troyer each singled, setting the stage for
Taylor Carraway's walk, which loaded the bases.
Kayla Turmell then delivered a crucial hit with a grand slam to left field, bringing in four runs and giving Oakland a 4-0 lead. WIU was unable to respond, as they were held scoreless in the bottom of the first.
In the second inning, Oakland continued their offensive momentum.
Storm Kentros singled, followed by a double from
Autumn Liebhauser, who registered her first career hit. Kopp's single to right field brought in Kentros, and
Maggie Murphy's triple drove home both Kopp and Liebhauser, extending Oakland's lead to 7-0 by the end of the second inning.
Oakland's defense remained solid in the third inning, as the Leathernecks were unable to score, with
Kenna Bommarito striking out two batters and keeping them hitless. The score remained 7-0 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, Murphy hit a double to right field, and
Annabel Power, who pinch-ran for Murphy, scored on a single by Carraway, pushing the lead to 8-0. WIU again failed to score as Bommarito struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning.
The fifth inning saw Oakland capitalize on errors by the Leathernecks.
Brooklyn Plitz walked and later scored on an error following Troyer's single. Murphy added another RBI with a single to right, bringing home Troyer.
Bella Crager and
Alyssa Balcom scored on another error, concluding the inning with Oakland leading 12-0. WIU was unable to break the shutout, as Bommarito closed the game by allowing two hits but no runs.

Kenna Bommarito delivered a complete game shutout against Western Illinois, allowing only three hits over 5 innings. She struck out seven batters and issued two walks while facing 19 batters. Bommarito threw 93 pitches, 60 of which were strikes, maintaining control throughout the game.
Addison Kopp tallied two hits and scored twice in her collegiate debut, contributing one RBI and stealing a base.
Maggie Murphy recorded three hits in her first game action in over a year, including a double and a triple, driving in three runs.
Kayla Turmell added a home run and brought in four runs, alongside being hit by a pitch.
