Softball Extends Win Streak to Four Games as they Sweep Doubleheader Against Cougars

Rochester, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies have hit their stride as they sweep the Cleary Cougars in a midweek doubleheader, outscoring Cleary by a combined 15-3 as Oakland extends their winning streak to four games.

GAME 1

The Golden Grizzlies put the pedal to the floor right out the gate in the opener, as Brooklyn Wyczalek knocked a two RBI double to deep center field to kick off the scoring in the first inning. Oakland would follow with a big four-run third inning as Kayla Rodriguez, Annabel Power, and Brooklyn Plitz all tallied RBI singles to give Oakland a commanding 6-0 lead.

Cleary would scratch the scoreboard with an RBI double in the fourth inning, but a pair of RBI singles from Power and Claire Loveland in the fifth inning would seal the deal for Oakland as they beat the Cougars 9-1 in five innings.

Maraina Smith earned her first win of the season for Oakland, tossing a fantastic complete game, allowing just one hit and strikng out five batters. Smith kept a no-hit bid going until the fourth inning, marking her best start of the season.

At the plate, four Golden Grizzlies earned multiple hits. Power (3-for-3, 2 RBI) led the way. Plitz (2-for-4, RBI), Wyczalek (2-for-3, 2 RBI), and Rodriguez (2-for-3, RBI) all had impactful games.

GAME 2

The second game saw much of the same from the first, this time with Oakland scoring their busiest inning in the first, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead once again.

Plitz would bring the first run across the plate as her and Strom kentros executed a perfect double steal. A Kam Troyer single, and a Loveland two RBI double would close the inning out as the Golden Grizzlies once again padded their lead.

Cleary would fight back with a little more aggression in this one, with a pair of RBI coming from Gabrielle Monreal, one in the second inning and another on a RBI single in the fourth inning, as the Cougars trailed by only two runs with a score of 4-2 at the end of the fourth inning.

The Golden Grizzlies would turn up the heat for one final game-securing stretch in the fifth inning. Alexa Kownack drove a fly ball just deep enough for Madi Herrington, who previously reached on a single, home to make the score 5-2 in favor of Oakland. Troyer would put the finishing touch on the win with a RBI single that stretched the lead to 6-2, and would stay there to close the game.

Troyer finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a pair of RBI. Herrington would also score two hits (2-for-3) as Oakland dominated the day.

The Golden Grizzlies will hit the road for another non-conference doubleheader this weekend as they visit Louisville on Saturday, Apr. 5.
