Softball Falls in Home Opening Doubleheader to Norse

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies dropped both of their initial opening weekend games to Northern Kentucky, despite a solid team performance at the plate in game one

GAME 1

The game began with a strong defensive showing from both teams, as Oakland's pitcher Alyssa Balcom retired Northern Kentucky in order in the first inning. However, the Norse broke through in the second inning with two runs, capitalizing on a triple and a timely hit to take an early 2-0 lead.

Northern Kentucky extended their lead with a run in the third and another in the fourth, making it 4-0. Oakland's offense struggled to find rhythm against Northern Kentucky's Brooklyn Ballis, who pitched a complete game while limiting Oakland to just two runs.

The Golden Grizzlies showed signs of life in the fifth inning. Brooklyn Wyczalek led off with a single, and Madi Herrington delivered a clutch double to bring home Oakland's first run of the game, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Oakland made one final push in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Brooklyn Plitz reached base and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Taylor Carraway, bringing the score to 7-2. However, Northern Kentucky's defense held strong to secure the win.

Herrington led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double, Brooklyn Wyczalek added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored, and Alyssa Balcom pitched a complete game, striking out five batters.

Despite the loss, Oakland registered just two less hits (9) than NKU tallied (11) in the game.

GAME 2

The teams took a quick 30-minute break before closing out their doubleheader, where NKU would use some power hitting to explode to a 6-0 win over the Golden Grizzlies.

Northern Kentucky took control early, scoring three runs in the second inning off Oakland starter Kenna Bommarito. A two-run home run by Trinity Robertson highlighted the frame for the Norse, putting the Golden Grizzlies in an early deficit.

Oakland couldn't retain the magic they had at the plate from game number one as Northern Kentucky's Alicia Flores threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out six.

Northern Kentucky added two more runs in the third inning with an RBI triple from Brielle DiMemmo and a run-scoring groundout. The Norse extended their lead to 6-0 in the fifth on Stella Wulker's solo home run.

The Golden Grizzlies' best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the third when Madi Herrington doubled with two outs, but Flores retired the next batter to end the threat. Brooklyn Plitz recorded the only other hit for Oakland in the contest.

The two teams finish out the series tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 22 at 3 p.m.
