SAGINAW, Mich. & SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The men's and women's track and field teams showcased their talent and depth over the weekend with notable performances, including Michael Hancock who set a new school record in the mile, as the team wrapped up the Jet's Pizza Invitational, hosted by Saginaw Valley, along with the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame.
At the highly competitive Meyo Invitational, junior Julian Bailey highlighted the men's sprints with a stellar weekend. Bailey won the 60m qualifying round with a time of 6.91 and advanced to finish sixth in the finals with a time of 6.90. He added another strong showing in the 200m, securing third place, crossing the line in 21.69 seconds. Evan Bryan also had a breakout meet, running a 7.04 in the 60m qualifying round and finishing 10th in the prelims.
In the hurdles, Kylei Anderson excelled in the women's 60m hurdles, advancing to the finals with a prelim time of 8.86 before placing fifth with a season-best 8.73.
The distance crew also stood out. Hancock ran an impressive personal best, and school record, of 4:04.67 to claim fourth in the men's mile. Logan Detweiler followed with a personal best of 4:11.97, finishing 20th. On the women's side, Erin Hegarty placed eighth in the 5000m with a time of 16:43.02, while Hannah Fisher led the women's mile group.
In the field events, senior Romario Jackson earned a runner-up finish in the men's weight throw with a mark of 17.69m. Alex Mansfield placed fifth in the men's shot put (16.47m), and Elizabeth Rice impressed with a personal best in the women's weight throw (15.94m), finishing 10th.
At Saginaw Valley State, Pierce Grzymkowski highlighted the meet by winning the men's 800m in a personal best time of 1:53.28, while Joshua Cundy placed sixth (1:55.23). Abigail Rice led the women in the 800m with an 11th-place finish (2:19.93).
In the mile, Madeline Richman ran a strong race to take sixth (5:05.36), with Abigail Rice finishing 14th (5:14.69). On the women's side of the 5000m, Amy Rowan led Oakland with a 14th-place finish (18:38.49), followed closely by Addison Johnson in 15th (18:42.43).
The team will split its time next weekend, as it's set for the Jud Logan Light Give Open, hosted by Ashland in Ashland, Ohio, followed by a trip west to Allendale, Mich., for the Mike Lints Alumni Open, hosted by Grand Valley State.
