ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland University men's golf team is heading to the Greater Cleveland area to participate in the annual Tom Tontimonia Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State University.
Oakland has participated in the Tom Tontimonia Invitational since CSU rebranded its annual golf tournament in the 2018-19 season. The tournament is named after longtime Cleveland State athletic administrator Tom Tontimonia. After going under a full renovation, the tournament will return to the Lakewood Country Club in Westlake, Ohio.
All but one Horizon League team will be competing in the invitational: Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, IU Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Youngstown State. Bowling Green State and the University of Findlay will join the conference teams in the action, while Kent State and Cincinnati will have individuals competing alongside them.
Jack Zubkus, Ellis Kinnaird, Luke Kelly, Brennan Sullivan, and Robert Burns will make up Oakland's team roster at the tournament. Matteo Rocco and Ben Willis will be competing as individuals in the event. The team will tee off with golfers from IU Indy and Northern Kentucky, while Rocco and Willis will compete next to individuals from Youngstown State and IU Indy.
In the past, Oakland has seen success in the Tom Tontimonia Invitational. Last year, the Golden Grizzlies won the event, with Kelly being crowned the Tontimonia Invitational Individual Champion after securing the win in a two-hole playoff. Overall, the men's golf team has won the invitational three times in the last four years.
A shotgun start is set for 9 A.M. (ET) on Monday, with the Golden Grizzlies beginning on holes 5-7, 16, and 17. The invitational will feature 36 holes on Monday, with the final round of 18 holes continuing on Tuesday.
Live stats for each round will be available on Clippd.
(Note: The Tom Tontimonia Invitational did not commence in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)
