ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland battled with IU Indy on Saturday, playing to a 2-2 draw at Oakland Soccer Field, officially finishing the season unbeaten at home in conference play.
The first half began with Oakland applying early pressure, resulting in a corner kick within the first minute.
Anuhea Aluli took a shot soon after, but it went out. Oakland continued to press, and in the 8th minute,
Alli Leonard found the back of the net, giving Oakland a 1-0 lead.
IU Indy responded with increased offensive efforts, but Weiger was steadfast, saving multiple attempts, including a shot by Lilly Ma at the 25th minute. However, in the 43rd minute, IU Indy's Shannon Phillips found the back of the net, leveling the match at 1-1, where the score would stay going into the half.
The second period commenced with Oakland quickly capitalizing on the momentum they previously built in the match. In the 51st minute,
Isabella Bierod propelled Oakland forward with a goal, assisted by
Brae Cole, on a stellar free kick set piece, giving them a 2-1 lead.
With time dwindling, IUI responded later in the period, with Anika Guenther leveling the score at 2-2 in the 82nd minute. Cole,
Mary Taylor Campbell, and Bierod all made efforts for game-winners in the 87th and 88th minutes, but the match would finish in a deadlock.
Weiger made seven saves throughout the game, tying a career-high, facing 12 shots in another solid performance. Bierod scored one goal and added three shots on goal from her four total attempts.
For the moment, Oakland still holds the final Horizon League Championship spot with 11 points, awaiting the result of Robert Morris who plays later tonight and currently holds the seventh spot with nine points.
Oakland will travel to face Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, Oct. 29 in their regular season finale. The matchup is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET at Titan Field.
