2025 Hall of Honor Inductee: Serena San Cartier

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Athletics is proud to announce that former track and field standout Serena San Cartier has been inducted into the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor, recognizing her remarkable achievements and lasting impact on Golden Grizzlies athletics.

A dual-sport athlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, San Cartier left an indelible mark on both the track and the soccer field during her time at Oakland.

Initially recruited for soccer, she seized the rare opportunity to compete in both sports, setting records and leading her teams to historic successes.

"I chose Oakland University for the opportunity to pursue both track and field and soccer," said San Cartier. "I was originally recruited to play soccer at Oakland, but wasn't ready to give up hurdling. Luckily, through the support of both my coaches, I was able to compete in both sports and fully pursue my athletic goals."

On the track, San Cartier cemented her legacy by setting the program's fastest outdoor 100m hurdles time (13.55s in 2015) and recording the third-fastest indoor 60m hurdles time (8.56s in 2013). She dominated the Horizon League, becoming a two-time Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field 100m hurdles champion (2014, 2015) and a two-time Horizon League Indoor Track and Field 60m hurdles champion (2014, 2015). Her excellence extended beyond competition, earning Summit League All-Academic honors twice, showcasing her commitment both athletically and academically.

Reflecting on her time at Oakland, San Cartier highlights a defining moment in her track career:

"One of my most memorable experiences at Oakland University was competing in my final Horizon League Track and Field Outdoor Championships at home, at our brand-new track and field facility. Sharing the excitement of the championships and celebrating my 100m hurdles title with all my teammates, friends, and family in attendance was truly unforgettable."

San Cartier continues to apply the lessons learned from her time as a Golden Grizzly in her everyday life.

"The individual aspect of track and field can be challenging, but forced me to grow as an athlete. I learned how to tackle challenges, push through struggles, and stay disciplined. Most importantly, I learned how to believe in myself and trust that I can do hard things. These are lessons I carry forward, and I know I can tackle any hurdle that comes my way."

In addition to her track success, she was a force on the soccer field, earning a spot on the All-Summit League First Team in 2011 and playing a key role in Oakland's two NCAA Tournament appearances. One of her most memorable moments came in the 2012 Summit League Championship, where she netted the game-winning goal to send the Golden Grizzlies to the NCAA Tournament.

San Cartier credits much of her success to the support of her teammates, coaches, and staff, particularly her training partner Breanna Peabody, coach Paul Rice, and athletic trainer Tom Ford—all of whom are past Hall of Honor inductees themselves.

"I recognize what a rare opportunity it was to have so many acclaimed individuals directly involved in my training," she said. "They inspired me to push past my limits and helped shape me into the athlete I became."

Her induction into the Hall of Honor is a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and the impact she had on Oakland University Athletics.

"To be inducted into the Hall of Honor alongside so many outstanding individuals is truly humbling," San Cartier expressed. "I am grateful for the recognition of my hard work and dedication throughout my time at Oakland, and grateful to all of those who supported me along the way."

San Cartier will be officially inducted at the 2025 Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony on Saturday, Feb 8., 2025 in the Oakland Center Ballrooms.
