2025 Hall of Honor Inductee: Derick Nelson

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland University Athletics is proud to announce the induction of former men's basketball standout Derick Nelson into the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor.
Nelson's contributions to Oakland basketball, both on and off the court, have solidified his legacy as one of the program's most impactful players.

Hailing from Lansing, Michigan, Nelson's journey to Oakland began after a prep year in Maine, where he caught the attention of the Golden Grizzlies.

Reflecting on his decision to join Oakland, Nelson said, "OU took a chance on me. It wasn't too far from home, and I felt like they were up and coming and I wanted to help grow a culture from day one."

Nelson's impact was immediate and undeniable. Over the course of his career, he became one of the program's most decorated players. Nelson finished 8th all-time in career rebounds (849), 22nd in all-time scoring (1,528 points), and tied for 6th in single-season rebounds with102 during the 2007-08 season.

Known for his defensive prowess, Nelson earned recognition as a Mid-Major Defensive All-American in 2010 and was named to the CollegeInsider.com All-Defensive Team the same year.

"I might be 6-4, but I played like I was 6-11," Nelson shared. "That was always me, super competitive and driven, and I'm like that in life as well. How I grew up made me strong and resilient. OU helped me grow into a man."

During his time with the Golden Grizzlies, Nelson was a three-time All-Summit League selection (1st Team in 2008, 2nd Team in 2010, Honorable Mention in 2007) and the 2010 Summit League Tournament MVP after a career-high 36 points in a championship clinching win over IUPUI, also setting the Summit League record for most field goals made in a conference tournament game (15).

He played a pivotal role in leading Oakland to its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009-10 and was part of two league championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.

Nelson's contributions extended beyond the stat sheet. He was a cornerstone of the program's rise to prominence.

"I'm so happy to be a part of building a great hoops program. To be one of the first guys from Lansing to go there and to help others go was a big deal to me."

One of his fondest memories at Oakland came off the court, showcasing his close relationship with head coach Greg Kampe.
"Kampe made a bet with me about school. I had to hit a GPA goal, and whoever lost got to cut the other person's hair. I won, so I got to cut Kampe's hair," Nelson recalled with a laugh. "He did all that to help me in life."

After graduating, Nelson played professionally overseas for six years before transitioning into his current role as Director for Scout Motors. Reflecting on his induction, he said, "I'm still shocked and surprised, but very honored. I never thought I would end up in the Hall of Honor when I got here. It may say my name, but it has been everyone who helped me. I thank all my coaches and teammates, my parents, and my family. All of them got me here. I'm happy I was able to wear the OU and do good things while I was here."

Nelson will be officially inducted at the 2025 Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony on Saturday, Feb 8., 2025 in the Oakland Center Ballrooms.
