Women's Soccer Bested by Golden Flashes in Final Road Game of the Month

KENT, Oh. - The Oakland Golden Grizzlies faced a tough challenge against the Kent State Golden Flashes in a women's soccer match on Sunday at Dix Stadium.

The match started with an early breakthrough for Kent State in the 5th minute when Samantha Miller scored an unassisted goal, putting the Golden Flashes ahead 1-0.

Oakland's attempted to respond with a close effort in the 27th minute by Lorelai Miller, whose shot went wide as they were unable to equalize before halftime.

The second half saw Kent State extend their lead quickly. In the 51st minute, Ava Todd scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Alisa Arthur, making it 2-0. Just five minutes later, Arthur herself got on the scoresheet, further increasing the lead to 3-0.

Kent State continued to press, and in the 70th minute, Alanna Raimondo scored the fourth and final goal of the match, with an assist from Mary Kate Lape, sealing a 4-0 win for Kent State.
Oakland made several attempts to get back into the game, with key shots on goal from Shannon Brown in the 58th minute and additional efforts by Frankie Mudd and Tally Diamond. However, they were unable to break through Kent State's solid defense, which was well-guarded by goalkeeper Heidi Marshall.

Throughout the game, Kent State dominated on offense, recording 14 shots, with eight on target, compared to Oakland's seven shots, two on goal.

Despite the challenging result, several Oakland players delivered strong individual performances. Shannon Brown led the team with two shots, one of which was on target, highlighting her as a key offensive threat throughout the match. Frankie Mudd also contributed to the attack with two shots, showcasing her persistent efforts to break through Kent State's defense. On the defensive side, Lorelai Miller played a crucial role, with her efforts including a key interception in the first half that prevented a potential goal. Tally Diamond, who registered one shot, was another player who worked tirelessly to create scoring opportunities for the Golden Grizzlies.

"It was a tale of two halves. I thought we played well in the first half, controlling possession and creating a couple of good chances, including one that hit the post towards the end of the half," said Oakland Head Coach Devin Zvosec. "However, we struggled again in the first five minutes of each half. We conceded a soft goal early in both halves, which has been a recurring issue. With a young team that didn't see much playing time last year, we're experiencing some growing pains. As a staff, we will continue to evaluate and work to correct the mistakes that keep leading to these avoidable goals."

The Golden Grizzlies return home for a match against Illinois State on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m.
