Men's Basketball to Participate in 2024 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Oakland University men's basketball team has been named one of eight participants for the 2024 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, set to take place Dec. 22-25 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

Other than the Golden Grizzlies, the tournament will feature two other 2024 NCAA Tournament teams in the College of Charleston and Nebraska out of the Coastal Athletic Association and the Big Ten, respectively. Charlotte (American Athletic), Hawai'i (Big West), Loyola Chicago (Atlantic 10), Murray State (Missouri Valley) and Oregon State (West Coast) round out the eight-team field.

The 15th edition of the ESPN Events men's college basketball tournament will be Dec. 22, 23 and 25. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through the bracket over three days for a total of 12 games. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in the championship game on the final day of the tournament.

Led by the longest-tenured head coach in NCAA Division I in Greg Kampe, the Golden Grizzlies are coming off its most historic season in program history. The team secured both a Horizon League regular season and tournament title and won its first NCAA Round of 64 game over the University of Kentucky. The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is the fourth-straight tropical tournament the Golden Grizzlies will participate in and the team's fifth in six years.

Last season, Oakland competed in the Cayman Islands Classic which featured four eventual 2023 NCAA Tournament teams in Oakland, Akron, Drake and Utah State. The Golden Grizzlies dropped a close tournament opener against Drake, 85-77, before it beat Loyola Marymount and Marshall to finish in fifth place.
