Men take Third, Women Fourth as the #HLTF Championships Wrap up

ROCHESTER, Mich. - In a busy slate of finals for day three of the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Golden Grizzlies returned to the track looking to add to their three titles thus far over the weekend.

In the first event of the day, Oakland saw the return of Jaimie Giese and Elizabeth Rice as they competed in the women's hammer throw. Rice set the tone in the first heat, using her initial throw of the day, which went a distance of 44.31, to take the top spot after heat one. Rice ended the event in scoring position, placing eighth as she bested her best throw by nearly two meters (46.07).

Simultaneously Kylei Anderson was competing in the women's high jump finals, where she finished fourth, reaching a height of 1.63m in just her second competition participating in the high jump this season, the first since the Bucknell Invitational on Apr. 13.

The Golden Grizzlies moved into their first final on the track in the men's 1500m finals, featuring Yami Albrecht and Logan Detweiler. Albrecht dominated the final, leading wire to wire and finishing nearly two seconds before the next runner, stopping the clock at 3:49.15 to take the crown in the event. Detweiler also scored for Oakland, placing a respectable fourth place with a time of 3:51.80. In the women's 1500m finals, the Golden Grizzlies once again shined. Hannah Fisher (4:38.32) and Madeline Richman (4:38.57) finished third and fourth, while Sarah-Rose Sullivan took the final scoring spot in eighth with a time of 4:41.76. Haileigh Bissett rounded out the Golden Grizzly athletes in the event, finishing 11th.

Pivoting to the first of the sprints finals, Jake Kaupp placed eighth in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 15.38s, while Anderson competed in her second event of the day in the women's 100m hurdles, placing fifth with a time of 14.13s. Julian Bailey finished top five in the men's 100m dash, speeding to a time of 10.72s, while Ke'vina Finch earned the sixth spot on the women's side, crossing the line in 12.13s.

In the 400m race Justin Kudera (48.68s) and Justice Stewart (48.80) finished seventh and eighth. In the women's 400m hurdles Grace Hungerford earned second place, making a push forward to get the silver spot in the final stretch as she ran a 1:02.25.

In one of Oakland's best races, they next took the track in the 800m race and showed their dominance. Eddie Harrell III defended his title, earning his second straight league title in the event, running a time of 1:52.55. Right there with him was his teammate TJ Brooks, who took the second spot on the podium with a time of 1:52.85. Abby Jackson was crowned the 800m queen on the women's side, concluding her record-breaking season as she crossed the line in 2:10.44. Karenna Duffey (2:14.78), Brooke Hinkleman (2:20.20), and Hannah Fisher (2:21.53) finished five through seven for the Golden Grizzlies to close out the event.

To close out the sprints for the meet, Ke'vina Finch clinched fifth place in the women's 200m dash with a time of 24.98.

Meanwhile, the final field event closed out as well with the men's hammer throw. Romario Jackson led the way for Oakland, placing third with a longest throw of 53.92m. Blake Foster finished right behind him in fourth with a toss of 53.30m.

In the final distance races of the day, teams took the track for the 5k race. For the men Carter McCalister was the first Oakland runner to cross the finish line, placing sixth with a time of 14:30.94. Albrecht finished ninth (14:44.13), Adam Jesse 12th (14:52.84), and Wesley Hollowell 15th (14:56.73) in the massive field of runners. In a deep field in the women's 5k the Golden Grizzlies took four top 12 spots, including the top spot as Erin Hegarty took the title with the fastest time in the field (16:52.05). Grace Nolan (17:10.92 earned fourth place, Makenna Scott (17:21.10) took seventh, and Jennifer Ohlsson (18:03.45) took 11th.

Maybe saving the most exciting event for last, the final started pistol blasts sounded for the 4x400 relays. Oakland's men's team, made up of Justice Stewart, Julian Bailey, TJ Brooks, and Justin Kudera, placed second with a time of 3:13.49 as they were barely eeked out in the final seconds by Milwaukee for the top spot. The women's team, with Hungerford, Sullivan, Fisher, and Jackson placed sixth with a time of 3:58.08 to close out the final event of the day.

The Golden Grizzlies ended the weekend taking third place on the men's side with 105 points as YSU took the championship title with 294 points, while the women placed fourth with 100.5 and Milwaukee earned the top team spot with 193.5 points.
