Jackson Wins Discus Title as Golden Grizzlies Kick off First Day of Horizon League Championships

ROCHESTER, Mich. - On a rainy day turned sunny, Oakland and the rest of the Horizon League Track and Field teams laced up for day one of the Horizon League Championship Meet.

The Golden Grizzlies saw their first top ten finisher in the men's javelin, as Jake Kaupp used a second throw of 44.87m to launch him up the ladder of the event and into the finals. In his final throw of the competition, he loaded up for a toss of 48.20m, earning him the seventh place spot in the event.

They saw their first win in the men's discus as Romario Jackson earned his second Horizon League Outdoor Title of his career in the event with a toss of 52.61m. He was joined on the podium by teammates Blake Foster (47.16m) and Alex Mansfield (45.28m) who finished fifth and seventh respectively. 

In the second to last event of the day, Oakland next competed in the men's and women's 1500m prelims. Under the lights, and with a spot in the finals on the line, Oakland pushed six athletes to the finals. Among them is Yami Albrecht, who finished first in heat two of the men's race with a time of  3:53.23, and Logan Detweiler who took the top spot in the third heat with a time of 3:53.68. Hannah Fisher continued the trend of top Oakland runners in the 1500m prelims, dominating the first heat of the women's race with a time of 4:38.78, the best time of any runner. Madeline Richman took home third place in heat two of the women's prelims, granting her an automatic qualifier to the finals with a time of 4:42.60. Haileigh Bissett (4:42.97) and Sarah-Rose Sullivan (4:45.05) also advanced to the finals as well.

Closing the day off were the 10000m races, where on the men's side Adam Jesse earned Oakland some points as he finished eighth with a time of 30:56.90. Grace Nolan earned a fourth place finish on the women's side as she stopped the clock at 36:12.17.

Oakland ends the day with 25 points, in total, 19 on the men's side as they sit in third place while the women's side accumulated five points to end the day in seventh place.

The track opens back up tomorrow at 9 a.m. to start day two of the Championship Meet as the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon finish their events bright and early.
