Golden Grizzlies set Numerous Personal Records as they Wrap up Golden Grizzlies Invite

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies set the track on fire in their first home meet of the season, putting their speed and strength on full display by setting 22 Personal records at the Golden Grizzlies Invite.

Oakland opened the day with the hammer throw where Elizabeth Rice would set her first of three personal records broken on the day, as she placed third in her flight and 10th overall with a throw of 39.39m. In the men's hammer throw Alex Mansfield threw a career best 42.81m as he placed in the top 15 of the event. Blake Foster placed fourth in the event with a throw of 51.61m, while Romario Jackson topped the charts for Oakland in the event, tossing it 52.34m for a third place finish.

Both the men and women followed right up with the discus. In the men's portion, the Golden Grizzlies dominated, securing three top ten spots. Jackson (51.23m) took home the gold spot, while Mansfield set another personal best (45.16m) to earn sixth place, followed by Foster (42.91m) in seventh. On the women's side Rice continued to have a career-day, setting a personal best with a throw of 29.30m, placing right behind teammate Jamie Giese who's throw of 34.33 set a career mark. 

In the final field event of the morning, Oakland's Alex Messina took home the silver spot in the women's pole vault with a jump of 3.35m.

Moving to the track, the Golden Grizzlies continued their success. In the women's 800m Oakland once again occupied three top ten spots as Abby Jackson (2.13.74) earned first place, followed by Hannah Fisher (2.18.33) in fifth place and Karenna Duffey (2.19.36) in eighth place.

The next personal best came in the women's 100m hurdles, where freshman Kylei Anderson qualified for the finals with a personal-best time of 14.48. She went on to finish fifth in the finals of the event.

The Golden Grizzlies also set a slew of records in the 100m race. On the men's side, Julian Bailey set his personal mark with a time of 10.88, while on the women's side Ke'Vina Finch (12.19) and Jaylin Washington (12.52) set personal bests in the prelims, joining teammate Grace Hungerford in the finals. Finch would earn her first win of the outdoor season, taking home first place in the finals with Washington taking third.

Finch continued domination in the 200m, earning second place with a blazing time of 25.08. Washington set career-best number two of the day in the event, finishing fourth, clocking in at 25.49. Julian Bailey and Justice Stewart mirrored the success for the men as Bailey finished second (21.99) and Stewart's top career time of 22.42 earned him eighth place.

Hungerford continued her incredibly strong start to the season, running her fastest time of her career in the women's 400m hurdles, finishing second, crossing the line at 1:02.27.

As Oakland finished up the short to mid distance races, the records didn't slow down in the long distance races. In the men's 3000m steeplechase Wesley Hollowell finished with a career-topping time of 9:21.19 as he finished in the top spot. In the men's 1500m race the men saw four top 12 finishers in Logan Detweiler, who finished second (3.54.88), Carter McCallister in fifth (3:57.77), and Eddie Harrell III who finished 12th with a personal best of 4:00.15. The women left their mark all over the top spots of the 1500m as well. Occupying the second through sixth spots were Erin Hegarty (4:42.11) in second, Madeline Richman (4:42.73) in third, Makenna Scott in fourth (4:44.91), Sarah Rose-Sullivan in fifth (4:46.15), and Jennifer Ohlsson in sixth (4:47.21). Hegarty, Scott, and Ohlsson all set their personal bests. Haleigh Bissett (4:48.28) and Genavieve Kushner-Lopez (4:52.94) also ran the best times of their careers, finishing eighth and 12th.

The final personal best on the track came in the men's 5000m where Christian Collis' time of 15:27.51 earned him eighth place, just behind Josiah Magley who finished in fourth (15:16.87). Oakland also had an impressive debut in a relay race for the season, finishing in second in the men's 4x400m relay with a time of 3:20.89.

Back in the field to end the day, another best was set in the women's shotput by Rice (11.22m) who finished eighth, behind Giese (11.70m) who ended in sixth. Mansfield topped the standings in the men's with his top mark of 16.42m. The final personal record of the day came in the men's javelin throw where Jake Kaupp's throw of 49.03m earned him a silver spot finish.

The Golden Grizzlies leave their opening home meet satisfied with the widespread success of the team, having by far their biggest day of the outdoor season. They will not lace back up to compete for another week, where they will travel to Bucknell University for the Bucknell Bison Classic on Apr. 13-14.
