Herrington's Three Hit Performance Falls Short as Wolverines Take the Win

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies and the Wolverines squared off for the second time this season as Oakland looked to even the season score between the two teams.

Oakland threatened to score first in the bottom of the opening inning as three walks to Brooklyn Plitz, Jen Krizka, and Taylor Carraway loaded the bases with two outs for the Golden grizzlies, but Michigan pitcher Erin Hoehn delivered an inning-ending strikeout to get out of the jam, keeping the game scoreless.

Oakland moved well into scoring position once again in the bottom of the second inning, starting with a Jenna Johnston two out double to left center field. Plitz laid into a pitch over the plate for a single up the middle, placing runners on the corners, but in a similar situation to the inning before, Hoehn struck out the final Oakland batter to end the inning.

The offense continued to churn for the Golden Grizzlies as Krizka and Ruhlman dropped back-to-back singles to left field to start the bottom of the third inning, putting runners on first and second base with no outs. Carraway grounded into a fielder's choice as Krizka was caught into a force out at third, keeping runners on first and second for Oakland. Madi Herrington stepped into the box and delivered a big single through the right side of the infield, scoring Ruhlman from second and giving the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead at the end of the third inning.

Starting pitcher for Oakland Maraina Smith was dealing to in just her second start of the season, allowing just two hits in her first 3.2 innings pitched. She was successful mixing up a combination of off-speed pitches, leaving the Wolverines guessing in many of their at-bats.

Michigan would strike their first blow of the game in the top of the fourth inning as a triple from Ella Stephenson brought home the speedy Indiana Langford, who earlier in the inning singled, tying the game at one apiece with two outs in the inning. The Golden Grizzlies defense stood strong as Krizka threw down to second base, where Brown applied the tag to catch a runner at second base to end the inning still tied 1-1.

Back to bat in the top of the fifth inning, Michigan added another run to their score after a walk and a single to start the inning, Ellie Sieler hit a deep double to right center field, bouncing off the wall and bringing home a run to put Michigan up 2-1. After a rough start to the inning for Smith, Oakland swapped pitchers, putting in Mia Konyvka for her fourth appearance of the year. With runners on second and third, Avery Fantucci pinch hit and delivered a two-RBI double to give the Wolverines a 4-1 advantage. The Wolverines added two more runs before the end of the inning, adding another two-RBI double to increase their lead to 6-1.

In the top of the sixth inning the Golden Grizzlies placed Mary Newton into the circle, where she threw a three up, three down inning as she closed out the game for Oakland.

Oakland responded to the Michigan onslaught of runs with a score of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. Plitz started the inning by reaching base as the Wolverines muffed a play at first base. She advanced to second on a passed ball, putting her in scoring position as Krizka came inches short of a big-fly, knocking a ball against the top of the wall in center for a single, bringing Plitz home to score and move the game to a 6-2 mark.

Michigan would take advantage once again in the top of the seventh, after an error and two walks loaded the bases for the Wolverines with two outs. Stephenson slapped a line-drive two-RBI single through the left side as Michigan led 8-2. The Golden Grizzlies would walk home one more as the score moved to 9-2 headed into the final half inning.

Oakland didn't go away quietly as Carraway and Troyer drew consecutive walks to start the bottom of the seventh inning, setting up a two RBI double to left field from Herrington as Oakland inched closer, with the score now 4-9. The Golden Grizzlies couldn't tack on another run to continue their rally, and fell 4-9 at home.

Despite both teams ending the day with nine hits each, Michigan's came in a more timely fashion and when they needed them the most. For Oakland, Herrington shined as she went 3-of-4 with three RBI, while Krizka went 2-of-3 with an RBI as well. Troyer also went 1-of-4, keeping her hitting streak alive and now at nine games.

The Golden Grizzlies take on Robert Morris this weekend for their regular season home series finale, beginning on Friday, Apr. 26 at 3 p.m.
