Golden Grizzlies Offense Slumps as they Fall 2-0 in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Oakland traveled an hour from home for an in-state face-off with the Michigan Wolverines.

The Wolverines struck first, exploding in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot home run from Jessica Conway, followed by another solo shot from Ava Costales just two batters later to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies looked to answer in the top of the second inning, as Kamryn Troyer started the inning off on base after a throwing error by Michigan. Oakland used two consecutive successful sacrifice bunts to advance Troyer to third, but their usual brand of small ball hitting didn't pay off this time and with two outs Allisa DiPrima popped out to end the inning as Oakland remained scoreless.

Oakland showed fight again in the fifth inning as a Jenna Johnston single with two out reignited the Golden Grizzlies at the plate. Leah Bieniewicz followed Johnston with a single of her own. Looking like another scoring opportunity, the chance was cut short as Johnston was caught trying to reach third base, ending the inning and holding the score at 2-0.

With one last chance to make a rally, the Golden Grizzlies stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Troyer reached base for the second time, leading off the inning with a lead-off single down the third base line that squeezed past the third baseman. Lauren Derkowski came up with her best stuff to close the game, striking out the next three Oakland batters as the Golden Grizzlies fell in a close 2-0 game.

Overall, Sydney Campbell was electric in the circle. She mixed up the combination of off speed pitches and fastballs, confusing the Michigan batters. She ended the game with six strikeouts, her second most this season, allowing just four hits. In nine starts, the senior ace has given up two or less runs in seven of those games. Bieniewicz also shined on the defensive end, making a slew of plays at first base as the defense kept the Golden Grizzlies within striking range the entire game.

The Golden Grizzlies went 3-23 at the plate, getting hits from Johnston,  Bieniewicz, and Troyer. The run support fell short in this game for Oakland, but it is only a matter of time until the bats get hot and they begin to strike on both sides of the field.

The Golden Grizzlies return to Rochester where they host their home opening series, beginning on Friday, Mar. 22 with a match against IUPUI at 3 p.m.
