Golden Grizzlies Split Pair of Competitions

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland Golden Grizzlies return home after a learning opportunity at the University of Michigan to take down the Grand Valley State Lakers at home.

MICHIGAN Men & Women: Loss 92 - 202
In a challenging dual meet against the University of Michigan on November 8, Oakland University faced a strong opponent, with both the men's and women's teams finishing with a score of 92 against Michigan's 202.

Key performances for Oakland included:
Men's 200 Yard Medley Relay: Oakland's team of Harry Nicholson, Christopher Palvadre, Micah Scheffer, and Charles Brown placed fourth with a time of 1:30.22.
Women's 1650 Yard Freestyle: Kelley Hassett finished fifth, clocking in at 17:37.76.
Men's 500 Yard Freestyle: Nicholas Subagyo took second place with a time of 4:34.73.
Women's 100 Yard Freestyle: Ronja Riihinen secured second, finishing at 52.47.
Men's 100 Yard Freestyle: Micah Scheffer was a strong contender, placing second with a time of 45.92.

Despite Michigan's dominant performance, Oakland swimmers and divers demonstrated resilience and competitiveness throughout the meet.

The Golden Grizzlies returned home to bounce back from Ann Arbor. The Golden Grizzlies got to work early, securing first and third in both Men's and Women's 200 yard Medley Relay. Karel Subagyo earned first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a blazing time of 9:10.56. In the 200 yard freestyle, Kelley Hassett (1:51.18) and Erika Pietras (1:51.55) took second and third for the Golden Grizzlies. On the men's side, Harry Nicholson took the top of the podium in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:36.05. Grace Albrecht took first place in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 54.74. In the women's 200 butterfly, Rhianna Hensler secured first with a time of 2:02.53, and Kate Teng finished third with a time of 2:05.41.

In the women's 50 yard freestyle, the Golden Grizzlies swept the podium. Jordyn Shipps finished first (23.19), Ronja Riihinen took second (23.77), and Mia Keranen rounded out the podium (23.88). In the men's 50 yard freestyle, Charles Brown secured second place with a time of 20.17. In the men's 200 yard breaststroke, the Golden Grizzlies finished one-two. Christopher Palvadre finished with a time of 1:56.30, and Carson Ricker with 2:01.06. The women's 500 yard freestyle had second and third place finishes from Kelley Hassett (4:57.07) and Erika Pietras (4:59.63). The men's 500 freestyle was a showdown, with Jonas Cantrell touching first (4:27.81) and Karel Subagyo (4:29.01) right behind him. 

In the women's 100 butterfly, Jordyn Shipps (54.03) finished first, with Rhianna Hensler (55.37) right behind to finish second. In the men's 100 butterfly, Auben Nugent finished second with a time of 48.44, and Micah Scheffer rounded out the podium with a time of 48.79. By the men's 200 yard individual medley, the Golden Grizzlies had run away with the lead. In the women's 400 yard freestyle relay, Oakland's A team, consisting of Ronja Riihinen, Same Thiessen, Mia Keranen, and Grace Albrecht delivered the final blow to the Lakers when touching first with a time of 3:22.93. The Oakland B team, consisting of Erika Pietras, Viviane Partridge, Kalin Wiltrout, and Kelley Hassett, took third in the same event, giving the Golden Grizzlies the win.

On the boards, Ellie Chalifoux and Edin DeHooghe took the top spot for both the women's and men's 3-meter dive. Chalifoux scored 316.20 and DeHooghe scored 313.50 in the event. Ellie Chalifoux also earned first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 277.88. Edin DeHooghe finished second in the event, scoring 270.38.

This win against the Lakers comes as revenge. In their meeting last season, the Lakers took home wins for both the men's and women's teams. This year the Golden Grizzlies stood strong and refused to let the Lakers go home victorious. 

The Golden Grizzlies hit the road for a match-up in Oxford, Ohio against the Miami University (Ohio) Redhawks at 3:00 p.m.
