Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Jordan Nelson

Early Goal Not Enough as Women's Soccer Falls to PFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Golden Grizzlies traveled to Indiana to take on the Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW) Mastodons in what turned out to be a high-octane, back and forth affair on the road.

The Golden Grizzlies got the party started early as Kimee Liu earned her first career goal in the 13th minute, firing a missile of a shot over Fort Wayne's keeper Jordan Imes from way outside the box to give Oakland a 1-0 lead to start the game.

The Mastodons and the Golden Grizzlies traded possession for much of the opening minutes, each getting their share of tries on goal as they both accumulated four shots in the first 25 minutes. Oakland seemed to be getting the better quality of chances though, putting three of their first four shots on goal.

The Mastodons didn't stay behind for long as Chloe Mariotti attacked the left side of the Golden Grizzly defense, sending a cross into Amanda Leonard who notched an equalizer as the score knotted up at one goal apiece in the 30th minute.

Less than ten minutes later PFW would continue their offensive surge, adding another goal to the tally as Audriana Rhyner floated a ball over Julia Zangerl in the Oakland goal from just beyond the edge of the box to give the Mastodons a 2-1 lead right before the half.

After the first 45 minutes of play Oakland held the advantage in shots on goal (4-to-3) and corner kicks (3-to-1) while the Mastodons held the upper hand in total shots (8-to-5). The teams played even in many aspects of the game, but PFW was able to capitalize on their chances.

All five of Oakland's shots on goal came from different players as Frankie Mudd, Thai Qualich, Bierod, Brown, and Liu took their chance at goal.

The Mastodons came out the second half picking right back up where they left off, scoring just two minutes into the half as Oakland's defense was caught playing upfield, allowing Gigi Riccardi to sneak past the defense and take a Mariotti service ball in for a goal into the top right corner, making the score 3-1 in favor of PFW.

The Golden Grizzlies continued to try and make a dent in the Mastodon lead as the half continued, but PFW began to control the pace of the match.

Oakland saw a chance to scratch away at the lead in the 66th minute as Brown intercepted a PFW pass and escaped into the open field, dishing the ball to Bierod who's right footed shot was stopped by Imes.

Brown continued a dynamic performance with another shot on goal in the 73rd minute aimed at the top right corner, but Imes rose to the occasion to make a diving save and keep the Mastodons a pair of goals ahead.

That would serve crucial as Oakland later capitalized on a corner kick in the 80 minute mark as Kimee Liu crossed the ball into the box, finding the noggin of Sara Ivandic as she pulled the Golden Grizzlies one step closer to a rally as the score turned 2-3 with less than ten minutes left.

Despite the comeback efforts, Oakland was unable to rally all the way back, falling 2-3 in Fort Wayne.

At the conclusion of the match, PFW led in shots (21-to-14) and narrowly in shots on target (8-to-7).

Oakland will travel back home for their next match as they host Wright State on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
