Rochester, Mich. - The 1994 Women's Swim and Dive Team has been inducted into the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor as part of the class of 2024. The Historic Team was part of a dynastic run for the program. Under Coach Tracy Huth, the team finished the 1993-94 season with an 8-2 record en route to a GLIAC Conference Championship and the Program's fifth straight Division II Championship.
The team was nationally known for their prowess in the pool, winning the Division II Championship with a total of 630 points and taking home first place in 12 different events. In the individual events, Ellen Lessig won the 50m freestyle, Amy Comerford took home gold in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, and the 200m IM races, while Kristen (Nagelkirk) Barnwell dominated the freestyle races winning the 100m, 200m, and 500m freestyle events. Debby Nichols also took the first place spot in the 1650m category.Â
This team was like no other in the history of the program. With a unique combination of in the pool talent and locker room chemistry, they pioneered the culture and tradition that stands around the swim and dive program.
"What made this team special was their mix of depth and talent. They had a lot to live up to, having won the previous four years and having a few key contributors graduate. They worked hard and were focused that entire year, following the blueprint of the historic program," said Huth. "They took advantage of those expectations, exceeded them, and dominated in the national meet".
The team also had immense conference success, winning what was one of seven GLIAC championships over the span of eight years. At the 1994 GLIAC Championships the team notched first places in 50m, 100m, 200m, and 1,650m freestyles, along with victories in the 100m and 200m backstroke.
"What stood out most to me was the team coming together and pulling out a win at the conference championship meet," said Huth.
