Campbell Breaks School Record in Split Doubleheader

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Pitcher Sydney Campbell made Oakland University Softball history Tuesday afternoon as the team split its #HLSB opener with IUPUI in Indianapolis with the school record of career wins came tumbling down for the redshirt junior.

GAME ONE - OAKLAND 8, IUPUI 1

Leadoff batter Madi Herrington was hit by a pitch to start the game while the rest of the early lineup couldn't get much going as the home Jaguars were able to get the bats firing in the bottom of the first frame for the leading run 1-0.

Using a gigantic second inning, four-straight walks by IUPUI put the red and black jerseys in a bind as the bases were loaded for the Golden Grizzlies under a pitching change as Reese Ruhlman crossed home for the tying run.

Herrington's double to left field brought two more across with two runs batted in for the sophomore as Maci Brown would make it back-to-back two base hits to score two more runs for Oakland at 5-1 with one out.

Still in the second, Allisa DiPrima was credited with an RBI single to see Brown through for the 6-1 lead as DiPrima was joined by freshman Kamryn Troyer with a single to left. The bases would be loaded once again, for the second time in the frame, with Ruhlman's walk as the seventh run off a sacrifice fly by Leah Bieniewicz saw the final run score in the inning by Oakland.

Picking up action in the sixth, an error by the Jaguars' second baseman saw Brown reach first with DiPrima walking the next at-bat. Both advanced via stolen base with Ruhlman's sac fly to right gave the green light for Brown to head home.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Jaguars were able to get contact with the ball as every Oakland outfielder had a chance to bag a fly-out with Campbell securing the victory in the 8-1 route.

Campbell has racked up a school record 49 wins in the circle while in a Golden Grizzlies jersey as a current redshirt junior. This bests Jessica Granger's career record of 48 wins set from 2007-2009.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Campbell notched her fourth win of the year, the 49th as started in her career, for the school record
  • Six of Oakland's nine batters recorded a hit
  • Both Herrington and Brown had a team-high two RBI
  • Brown finished 2-4 at the plate

GAME TWO - IUPUI 6, OAKLAND 5

Both teams were not able to get anything going in the first inning of game two with the Jaguars getting the first run across in the bottom of the second followed by two more runs in the third.

Oakland's offense finally answered in the fourth with Ruhlman's leadoff double to right field, advancing to third from Jenna Johnston's sac bunt. On ball four to Bieniewicz, Ruhlman scored a run as the pitch went wild past the Jaguars' catcher.

Herrington singled to second as Bieniewicz advanced. Brown hacked a base hit to right center, sending Bieniewicz home. DiPrima batted in a two RBI single for the 4-2 lead.

IUPUI's tying runs knotted things up in the subsequent frame at 4-4 at the end of four.

Ruhlman was once again the scoring runner via her leadoff single to shortstop in the top of the sixth with the help of freshman Taylor Carraway's RBI single at 5-4.

The Jaguars used the tying run in the fifth and the winning run in the sixth to split the doubleheader.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Ruhlman finished 2-3, DiPrima 2-4 at the plate
  • DiPrima also batted in two RBI to go along with her two hits, Carraway and Brown adding one apiece
  • Jen Krizka joined Brown with a triple in the game. As a team, Oakland was seventh in NCAA Division I in triples per game heading into the match
  • Campbell gets credit for the loss (4-3 on the year) after coming in relief for Mia Konyvka

The Golden Grizzlies' first home series will take place on March 24-25 at the Oakland Softball Field in Rochester as #HLSB foe Northern Kentucky come to town.
