FAIRBORN, Ohio – Playing the first of consecutive road games to round out the regular season, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies were defeated by the Wright State Raiders, 83-75, on Thursday, February 23 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
With this loss and the Milwaukee Panthers' Thursday victory over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, Oakland now stands alone in eighth place in the Horizon League at 12-16 overall and 7-12 in conference action.
Snapping a three-game skid, Wright State improves to 6-23 and 5-14 in the Horizon League, tying them with the Robert Morris Colonials for ninth in the conference standings.
Freshman
Brooke Quarles-Daniels registered her third double-double for the Golden Grizzlies, finishing with a career-high 21 points on 10-17 shooting and 10 rebounds. Coincidentally, two of these three double-doubles have come against the Raiders, as she also had 17 points and 11 boards back in the January 15 meeting at the O'rena.
Her fourth time in double figures in the last seven games, sophomore
Kennedie Montue had 19 for Oakland, her second-best total of the season, and junior
Alexis Johnson and senior
Breanne Beatty also cleared the double-digit mark, tallying 12 and 14, respectively.
Sophomore forward
Miriam Ibezim nearly made it five Golden Grizzlies in double figures, ending the night with nine points and a career-best 12 rebounds.
Wright State also had a quartet of players score at least 10 points, led by graduate student Izzy Bolender with a game-high 23 and followed by sophomore Kacee Baumhower with 16, junior Rachel Loobie with 12 and senior Bryce Nixon with 10.
Oakland held a three-point lead, 19-16, after one quarter of play, but the Raiders used a strong second quarter to take a five-point cushion, 44-39, into the halftime break. Wright State upped it to six, 62-56, after the third and the Golden Grizzlies pulled within four, 69-65, with five minutes to go on a Quarles-Daniels layup but could not come any closer.
With over 56 percent of Oakland's Thursday rebounds collected by Ibezim and Quarles-Daniels, the Golden Grizzlies won the battle on the glass, 39-29, but the Raiders dished out more than twice as many assists, 16-7.
