ROCHESTER, Mich. - After a great week for all teams at Oakland University, graduate student
Yami Albrecht from the men's track and field team and sophomore
Maddy Skorupski from women's basketball were named OU Prairie Farms Athlete of the Week.
The track and field squad headed west to Allendale, Mich., for its final event of 2023 in the GVSU Holiday Open Friday (Dec. 8). Oakland saw nine members of its team finish with personal bests, two on the men's side and seven on the women's, as the Golden Grizzlies placed three in the top-five with one second-place finish. Among those personal bests were Albrecht who, not only set his own record in the 5000m race with a time of 14:05.39, but set the Oakland indoor record as he went on to finish 5th in the event. Albrecht, who set his previous best at the same event last year, beat his own time by nearly :20 seconds en route to setting the Oakland record. Both the men's and women's track and field team are back in action Friday, Jan. 19 at Saginaw Valley for the SVSU Doug Hansen Open.
On the hardwood, Skorupski and the women's basketball team rallied at home this past Saturday (Nov. 9) and erased a 20-point deficit to beat Central Michigan, 79-76. Coming off the bench, Skorupski recorded a season-high, and game-high, 19 points as she went 6-of-12 from the floor with four makes from range. With four steals and three rebounds, the sophomore was crucial down the stretch for the Golden Grizzlies to take the home game and carry momentum into an 8-game break. She made two from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter one of which to put the Golden Grizzlies ahead by one, followed by a go-ahead layup with 3:52 to go to give Oakland a late lead. The women's basketball team is back in action at home Sunday (Dec. 17) with another MAC game against Toledo, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. inside the OU Credit Union O'rena.
