Rochester, Mich. - Oakland hosts Detroit Mercy in their final regular season game of the season.
Oakland is on the heels of a heart-breaking loss to Green Bay, where they gave up three unanswered goals after taking an early 1-0 lead. Going into their game against Green Bay, Oakland had a chance to clinch the number one seed on the Horizon League. Thankfully for the Golden Grizzlies, the team right behind them could not capitalize on the Oakland loss, as IUPUIÂ tied to Milwaukee, giving them 14 points towards the standings while Oakland remains at 15.Â
Oakland will once again have a chance to clinch the number one seed in the #HLMSOC Championship with a win against Detroit Mercy. The Golden Grizzlies could still secure the one seed with a tie, but would need losses from Green Bay and IUPUI to help them. With a loss, Oakland could fall as far as fourth in the standings going into the championship tournament.
After going scoreless in the previous two matches, fifth year forward
Mikey Ketteman found his groove again by scoring the lone Oakland goal against Green Bay for his eighth goal of the season, good for second most in the Horizon League. Oakland's first half offense has been hit or miss throughout the season, and while they are among the top second half scoring teams in the league, they will be looking to play ahead in the upcoming rivalry game.
Oakland has been the beneficiary of a one-sided rivalry in this inner-state affair, boasting a 13-3-7 record all-time against the Titans. The Golden Grizzlies have either won or tied in the previous 12 games against Detroit, with their last loss coming in a 1-2 overtime defeat in November of 2010.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit has already clinched their spot in the #HLMSOC Championship with a 5-8-3 record (4-2-2 HL). They are one of three teams in a tie for second place in the league, and with a win they could leapfrog Oakland and take the number one spot.
After starting the season off 0-6, the Titans have bounced back in a major way and have completely turned their season around. They most recently secured a 3-1 victory over Robert Morris.
Both Oakland and Wayne State have their postseason outlooks riding on this matinee game at Oakland Soccer Field tomorrow afternoon.
