ROCHESTER, Mich. – Falling back to .500 on the season at 10-10 and 5-6 in Horizon League play, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies were defeated by the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, 73-64, on Thursday, January 26 at the O'rena.
In double figures for the seventh-straight game and her sixth consecutive with at least 17, freshman point guard
Brooke Quarles-Daniels led the Golden Grizzlies with 18 points on 8-11 shooting, six assists and six rebounds.
Junior forward
Alexis Johnson joined her in double-digits with 16 and five rebounds, and senior
Breanne Beatty nearly tallied a double-double with nine points and nine boards.
Sophomore
Kennedie Montue finished with seven points and graduate student
Raquel Ferrer-Bernad hit a pair of 3-pointers for six, her most since the December 19 victory over the Madonna Crusaders.
Mendota, Illinois' Amellia Bromenschenkel paced all scorers with 24 points and the junior also racked up nine rebounds and six assists for the Mastodons.
Shayla Sellers, a senior from Aurora, Ohio, went 4-8 from distance and ended with 16 points and sophomore Audra Emmerson, the pride of Fishers, Indiana, had 11, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Purdue Fort Wayne held a two-point margin, 17-15, after the first quarter of play Thursday and the Mastodons upped it to nine, 34-25, by the half.
A Bromenschenkel layup with 2:46 to play in the third quarter matched Purdue Fort Wayne's largest lead of the night at 15 points, 53-38, but Oakland closed the frame on a 5-0 run to cut it to 53-43.
The Golden Grizzlies continued their comeback attempt throughout the fourth, having it down to four, 62-58, with 2:14 remaining, but Sellers dialed up and hit her final triple of the night with 1:54 left to put the Mastodons back up seven, 65-58, and Purdue Fort Wayne slightly spread it back out from there.
For the game, Oakland shot 39.7 percent (27-68) from the floor and 20 percent (5-25) from behind the arc. The Golden Grizzlies were just 1-9 from distance in the first half, but were a little better in the second at 4-16.
With Bromenschenkel and Farmersville, Ohio junior Audrey Stupp leading the way, the Mastodons gave Oakland all they could handle on the glass as the Golden Grizzlies outrebounded Purdue Fort Wayne by just a lone board, 35-34.
Highlighted by Quarles-Daniels' six, four from Johnson and Beatty's three, Oakland did record 17 assists Thursday, their second-most in a contest this season, trailing only the 19 in the win over Madonna.
