A SPLIT ON THE FINAL DAY FOR OAKLAND CONCLUDES THE EVANSVILLE INVITE

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Oakland University Softball finished the Evansville Invitational on Saturday, splitting meetings with Morehead State and Creighton to return from the team's trip 4-6 with the 2-1 win and 14-6 loss, respectively.

GAME ONE VS MOREHEAD STATE

Both teams recorded a single in the first inning as Madison Jones would get on with a hit to left field before stealing second base as the next three batters grounded out to the Eagles' defense to retire the side. Morehead State would go three up and three down with Sydney Campbell in the circle as both teams would record hits sandwiched between strike outs and ground outs the next two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Oakland would strike first as Maci Brown was walked in the bottom of the order as both Jones and Cammie Brummitt would do their job and hit singles to right and up the middle of the Eagles' infield. Madi Herrington's bat would bring Brown in for an RBI as the Golden Grizzlies would lead 1-0.

Morehead State and Oakland would lock horns as both teams exchanged batters up and down the order with three and four batters apiece until Brummitt's next at bat resulted in her second home run of the season to left field as the Golden Grizzlies were now up 2-0.

The Eagles had a chance in the top of the seventh as the leadoff batter at the top of the order would get on first and steal second only to be brought around and score off a lineout to second base as the next two batters would fly out to OU's defense for the 2-1 win.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Brummitt got two hits on three at bats to lead the teams with an RBI off her homerun, her second of the year
  • Jones would also collect two hits off three at bats against the Eagles' arms
  • Campbell worked all seven innings for Oakland allowing one earned run off four hits with seven strikeouts, tied for the most in her 10 appearances

GAME TWO VS CREIGHTON

In OU's final game of the invitational, the battery of the Golden Grizzlies were made quick work of by the Bluejays out of the Big East as the top of the order went three up and down. Creighton, however, wasted no time getting into the scoring column, taking four runs going through all nine batters in the order.

Oakland was unable to respond as Creighton would tack on another run in the bottom of the second. It wasn't until the subsequent half-inning or OU where Jessie Munson was brought across by Jones' single through the left side with the Romeo native reaching third off an error only to score off Brummitt's sacrifice fly.

The Golden Grizzlies were facing a 6-2 deficit from the Bluejays' bottom of the third score before Oakland made a mid-game push with Allisa DiPrima pinch-running for Lauren Griffith's double reaching all the way to third as Munson went up to bat. The redshirt senior struck an RBI single to center to close the gap at 6-3 with Reese Ruhlman scoring off interference at 6-4. Muson would reach third with the Oakland bats firing on all cylinders as Brown would bring Munson in as the Golden Grizzlies were within one run at 6-5.

Unfortunately, Oakland's comeback was cut short as the Bluejays would add on with eight more runs to call the game at 14-6 in six innings.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Oakland had six runs off six hits as the Bluejays out-struck OU with 15 hits of their own
  • Jones tallied an RBI in three at bats with one run and one hit
  • Munson collected a big game going 3-2 with two runs and two hits for an RBI
  • Brown appeared in her first start in the circle for Oakland before Campbell came in relief to allow four hits and two runs
Horizon League play begins on March 11-12 in Highland Heights, Kentucky for the Golden Grizzlies for a three-game series with the Norse of Northern Kentucky starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.
