Golden Grizzlies use big fourth quarter to run past Stonehill

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Tallying a season-high point total, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies bested the Stonehill Skyhawks, 83-59, in the TD Bank Classic Third-Place Game on Sunday, November 27 at the Patrick Gymnasium on the University of Vermont campus.

The win moves Oakland back to .500 this season at 3-3, while the Skyhawks fall to 1-6 in their first campaign at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level.

This was a six-point game, 60-54, after 30 minutes of play, but the Golden Grizzlies separated themselves in a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring Stonehill by 18 over this span, 23-5.

Hitting 5-11 3-point attempts, Oakland junior Linda van Schaik led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. This new personal best includes the three seasons she played in the Sun Belt Conference with the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and is the most any Golden Grizzly has recorded in a game this season.

Scoring in double figures for the second-straight game and fourth time this year, junior Alexis Johnson finished with 15 and sophomore Miriam Ibezim and freshman Brooke Daniels joined her, pitching in 10 and 14, respectively.

Freshman forward Cam Grant had a productive six minutes, ending up with four points and three rebounds, and senior standout Breanne Beatty had another well-rounded showing, racking up six points, three assists, three boards and two steals.

Fifth-year senior Sophie Glidden paced the Skyhawks with 19 points, with classmates Mia Kelly and Emily Bramanti also reaching the double-digit mark.

Sunday was Oakland's best shooting performance of the season, as the Golden Grizzlies knocked down 50.7 percent (36-71) of their shots, including 36.8 percent (7-19) from 3-point range.

Oakland outrebounded Stonehill, 36-26, and tripled the edge on the offensive glass, 15-5. The assist column was nearly even, with the Golden Grizzlies registering 14 and the Skyhawks 13.
