CLEVELAND, Ohio – Two first-half goals propelled the No. 4 Oakland Golden Grizzlies to a halftime lead over hometown No. 1 Cleveland State in a Horizon League Men's Soccer Tournament Semifinal Thursday, but three second-half tallies vaulted the Vikings to a 4-2 victory.
With the defeat, the Golden Grizzlies wrapped up their 2022 season at 4-10-5 (4-2-3 Horizon League).
Taking the field for the first time since November 2, Cleveland State (10-3-5, 5-1-3) will now play twice in a three-day period, facing the winner of Thursday's other semifinal between the No. 2 Wright State Raiders and No. 3 IUPUI Jaguars in Saturday's Horizon League Tournament Championship Match with the conference's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament on the line.
Vikings senior Albert Portas started the scoring in the seventh minute, and junior Gabe Baylon evened things back up for Oakland in the 19
th with his second goal of the year. His third consecutive match finding the back of the net, freshman
Charlie Retzer gave the Golden Grizzlies a 2-1 lead in 42
nd that lasted until the halftime break.
Retzer's tally would be Oakland's last, however, and three Cleveland State goals in the match's final 33 minutes – one from senior Pablo Kawecki and a pair from junior Bojan Kolevski – were enough for the Vikings to move on.
The Golden Grizzlies registered eight shots to Cleveland State's 19, and there were a total of 33 fouls in the contest – 16 called on Oakland and 17 on the Vikings.
