ROCHESTER, Mich. - Detective Shona Collins of the Oakland University Police Department has been named the 2022 recipient of the George Wibby Award.

Originally a detective with the Pontiac Police Department, Detective Collins has been part of the Oakland University Police Department for over 13 years. She has been a consistent friend of athletics and annually facilitates sexual violence prevention programming for 350+ student-athletes.

"Detective Shona Collins is a well-deserved recipient of the George Wibby Award. For years, Detective Collins has provided education and training to OU student-athletes and athletics department staff, serving as an important resource for the athletics department and the entire campus community. She exemplifies the spirit and devotion to Oakland University, as well as the compassion and care for the OU community that the Wibby Award recognizes," Director of Athletics Steve Waterfield said.

In the past three years, she has conducted more than 50 workshops for athletics through individual team meetings and the summer bridge program. Detective Collins is passionate and provides a variety of programming to help student-athletes understand numerous facets of sexual violence, including domestic partner violence, stalking, bystander intervention, and reporting processes and structures.

ABOUT THE AWARD
George Wibby's long history with Oakland University began in the 1960s as an official for the swimming and diving program. Wibby was also a familiar face at basketball games and golf outings. After retiring from the American Red Cross, Wibby coached golf and worked as a golf ranger at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course. Wibby established the Jewel Wibby Scholarship Fund in honor of his wife after her death.

To recognize Wibby's dedication and service to Oakland, the George Wibby Award was established in 1987. This award is given to an Oakland University employee who exemplifies spirit and devotion to Oakland, along with compassion and care for those around them.

Detective Collins will be recognized as part of the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Marriott Centerpoint. To learn more about the ceremony and register to attend, guests are encouraged to visit goldengrizzlies.com/HOH.
