ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland University softball program celebrated Senior Day with a sweep over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon at the Oakland Softball Field. The Golden Grizzlies opened the day with a 7-0 shutout victory and followed with a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win against the Mastodons. OU improved to 16-2 at home with the doubleheader sweep, which set a school record for home wins in a season.
Game 1: Oakland 7, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Sophomore
Sydney Campbell was dealing in the series opener, hurling a three-hit shutout to lead the Golden Grizzlies past the Mastodons, 7-0. The opener transpired over two days due to weather forcing the Friday Horizon League contest to resume play in the bottom of the third inning on Saturday.
Campbell (14-5) went the distance for Oakland (22-14, 21-11 HL), giving up three hits, walking none, and striking out four. She retired the side in order in four of the seven frames.
Offensively, the Golden Grizzlies were paced by sophomore
Jen Krizka, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBI. Senior
Jamie Squires compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Redshirt junior
Madison Jones also helped out for OU, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk.
The Golden Grizzlies took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Oakland scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Krizka.
Oakland then tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fifth when they scored three times. Senior
Jessie Munson's run-scoring single was the big hit in the three-run frame. Both senior
Kayla Marburger and junior
Sidney Rayba arrived as pinch-runners in the fifth inning and came around to score as well.
Game 2: Oakland 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 5
Oakland rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning and walked it off on a single off the bat of Munson to pick up the 6-5 win over PFW in the Saturday closer.
Offensively, OU was led by junior
Lauren Griffith, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and four RBI. All four of her runs driven in came in the final three innings of the ballgame. Redshirt junior
Cammie Brummitt put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-4. Jones also contributed, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate.
Senior
Kayla Marburger (1-0) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the victory out of the bullpen for the Golden Grizzlies. Senior
Lauryn Debono made an impact in the circle, throwing three innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. A pair of senior pitchers in
Chelsea Wiggins and
Emily Karas also made appearances in the win.
The 'Dons (12-25, 11-22 HL) struck first with a leadoff inside the park home run in the opening frame. The score remained 1-0 in favor of PFW until the top of the fifth inning, when the visiting squad pushed across three runs to increase its lead to 4-0.
The Golden Grizzlies answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame, as Griffith hit a three-run homer to score Jones and senior
Rachel Zerona.
Purdue Fort Wayne extended their lead to 5-3 before Oakland rallied to score three times in the bottom half of the seventh to claim victory, walking it off on a run-scoring single off the bat of Munson.
The Golden Grizzlies are slated to close their series against the Mastodons with a 10 a.m. Sunday doubleheader. Following the Sunday doubleheader, OU will return to action at the Horizon League Tournament from May 13-15 in Youngstown, Ohio.
