ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland University softball program extended its win streak to six games with a sweep over Cleveland State on Friday, April 9, at the Oakland Softball Field. The Golden Grizzlies earned a 4-1 win in the opener and followed with a come-from-behind 9-4 victory in game two.
Game 1: Cleveland State 1, Oakland 4
Junior
Cammie Brummitt collected a school-record three doubles to lift the Golden Grizzlies past the Vikings, 4-1, in the Friday opener.
Brummitt's three doubles were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, which included an RBI. Junior
Lauren Griffith compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a three-run home run. The longball marked the third-straight game that Griffith homered. Freshman
Maci Brown also chipped in for the Golden Grizzlies with her first-career triple.
Sophomore
Sydney Campbell (9-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Oakland (14-8, 13-5 HL). The right-hander pitched a complete game for the eighth time this season, giving up one run on 11 hits, allowing no walks, and striking out three.
CSU (9-21, 4-14 HL) had its fair share of opportunities with runners on base in every inning. However, the Vikings could only push across one run and stranded a total of eight baserunners.
Cleveland State reached the scoreboard first, as the visiting squad turned four hits into one run in the top of the second inning.
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Grizzlies started clicking in the bottom of the third frame with four runs on three hits, punctuated by a three-run home run off the bat of Griffith that scored
Madison Jones and Brummitt.
The score remained 4-1 for the rest of the game, as OU held on for its fifth-straight win.
Game 2: Cleveland State 4, Oakland 9
The Oakland offense pushed across multiple runs in three different innings en route to a 9-4 victory over the Vikings in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
The Golden Grizzlies took advantage on the base path with a season-high seven stolen bases. Meanwhile, CSU struggled on both ends with just six hits on offense and six errors defensively.
Senior
Jessie Munson led the way offensively for OU, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and two RBI. Brummitt's impressive day continued, as she went 2-for-4 with a double. Senior
Rachel Zerona and sophomore
Jen Krizka contributed with RBI singles, while another senior in
Jamie Squires made an impact with two hits and two stolen bases.
Senior
Chelsea Wiggins (2-2) earned a win in the circle for the second-straight week, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, allowing two walks, and striking out six in 6.0 innings of work. Senior
Emily Karas finished off the win by throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits.
Trailing 2-0, the Golden Grizzlies quickly evened the score with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Munson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Brummitt, while Squires singled up the middle to score Krizka.
The Vikings then rallied to score two runs and take a 4-3 lead before Oakland got back on the board in the third. OU plated two runs in the frame, highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of Munson, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland held CSU scoreless before building their lead to 6-4 in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single by Zerona.
OU added three runs of insurance in the next inning to increase its advantage to 9-4. The score stood at 9-4 for the remainder of the contest, which clinched the doubleheader sweep and sixth-straight win for the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland will be back in action tomorrow for a noon doubleheader against CSU.
