SOFTBALL EARNS FRIDAY SWEEP OVER UIC

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland softball program got back to its winning ways with a doubleheader sweep over the UIC Flames on Friday, April 23 at the Oakland Softball Field. The Golden Grizzlies earned a 4-2 win in the opener and followed with an impressive 7-0 victory in game two. The pair of victories extended OU's home win streak to a program-best 12 games.

Game 1: UIC 2, Oakland 4
A two-run single by redshirt junior Cammie Brummitt and a strong outing in the circle by sophomore Sydney Campbell propelled Oakland to a 4-2 win over UIC in the series opener.

As a team, seven batters in the OU lineup collected hits. The Golden Grizzlies were led by Brummitt, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior Lauren Griffith put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Maci Brown also chipped in for Oakland, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

Campbell (11-4) earned the win in the circle for the Golden Grizzlies (18-12, 17-9 HL). The right-hander pitched a complete game, giving up two runs, just one earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out one. The LaGrange, Ohio native limited UIC (22-16, 19-9 HL) to no runs on a mere four hits from the third inning on.

The Golden Grizzlies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning with the game still scoreless. OU got an RBI single from Griffith, scoring redshirt junior Madison Jones from second base.

The Flames then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Golden Grizzlies got back on the board in the fourth. Oakland managed to score three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Brummitt, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Golden Grizzlies.

The score remained 4-2 for the rest of the game, as Oakland held on for the win.

Game 2: UIC 0, Oakland 7
Senior Chelsea Wiggins tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Golden Grizzlies to a 7-0 victory against the Flames in game two.

Wiggins (3-4) went the distance for Oakland, giving up just three hits, walking one, and striking out four. She retired the UIC lineup in order in four of the seven frames.

Offensively, the Golden Grizzlies were once again paced by Brummitt, who batted 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI. Senior Jamie Squires helped out as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Jen Krizka put together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk, and an RBI. A pair of outfielders in Rachel Zerona and Allisa DiPrima showcased pop with an extra-base hit apiece.

The Golden Grizzlies took the lead for good with three runs in the opening frame, as the trio of Jones, Squires, and senior Jessie Munson hit RBI singles.

Brummitt drove in two runs with a home run to dead center to extend OU's advantage to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Squires and Krizka drove in runs in the following two innings to increase the Golden Grizzly lead to 7-0.

Meanwhile, UIC could not make a push offensively, which resulted in a 7-0 victory for Oakland in game two.
