Q&A WITH SENIOR SECOND BASEMAN JESSIE MUNSON

Munson Q&A
ROCHESTER, Mich.
— Senior second baseman Jessie Munson has flashed skill with her bat, speed, and glove since joining the Golden Grizzlies in 2017. She has totaled 125 starts in her four-year career and is tied for sixth in program history in sacrifice hits with 20. The Harrison Township, Mich., native is off to a hot start this season, as she is batting .277 with five runs batted in to go along with four stolen bases.

Is there a rival team you look forward to playing against each year?
We always look forward to playing against UIC and Youngstown State. They are always good competitors, so we work hard and come out at our best for them. It is a very exciting lead-up to the weekend because we have looked forward to the matchup for so long.

If you went to jail, which teammate would you call and why?
Oh, it would have to be Jamie (Squires). She is on top of the responsibility list. She would help me no matter what and is that one person that is always there for you.

Are you involved with any clubs on campus?
I am one of the softball reps for SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee). I was in student council in high school and when I got the opportunity to do it during my sophomore year, I was so ready to be a part of it. It has really opened my eyes to other teams and how to work along with other student-athletes.

What are some hobbies you have outside of softball?
Outside of softball, I love spending time with family. I enjoy going on trips, being outdoors, and baking and cooking. I also love going out to eat. Actually, going out to eat would be my number one on the list.

Do you have any upcoming trips planned after the season?
This summer, I am going to a wedding in Chicago. My family and I always go up north Michigan for a couple of weekends during the summer as well. Usually, we do a big trip out west to Colorado or Hawaii in a normal year.

Who is always pumping everyone up on the team?
Coach Jenna (Blythers)! She is the kind of person that provides a spark and is always down to have fun. Having a coach like that around is so encouraging.

Has softball taught you any life skills that you apply to everyday life?
Teamwork, leadership, and time management. Learning how to play a sport while managing school and life in general has helped me use my time wisely. Along with teamwork, collaborating with others and working with people who might not think the same as you has been a learning experience. Lastly, with our freshmen class, I try to answer questions they have and just be there for them, honestly.

Do you have any plans after college?
I am a nursing student right now, but I want to go into the pediatrics field and OB-GYN route. I love kids and have always worked well with them. I love babies and just learning about pregnancy is so cool to me.
