YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Macey Wierenga and
Jackie Reilly netted their first career goals for the Golden Grizzlies as the Oakland women's soccer team defeated Youngstown State, 2-1 in the season opener from Farmers National Bank Field.
Wierenga got things started for Oakland (1-0) early, as the sophomore's goal came just six minutes in.
Carmela Barro and
Alexa Sabbagh recorded the assist. Sabbagh led the Golden Grizzlies in shots (4) and shots on goal (2) on the afternoon.
Reilly added another goal for the Golden Grizzlies just 20 minutes later with another helper coming from Barro and
Sami Lopez adding an assist of her own to give Oakland a 2-0 lead.
Youngstown State (0-1) scored nearly 30 minutes into the first half on a penalty kick, to pull within one, but the Penguins wouldn't get any closer.
Oakland will welcome UIC to Rochester in its home opener Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m.
