
LAS VEGAS, NV. - The Golden Grizzlies held a one-point lead at halftime, but a 21-6 third quarter led to a 79-58 loss against the Marshall Thundering Herd.
It was the second game of a back-to-back for Oakland after playing Bowling Green the night before in the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, NV.
Kayla Luchenbach led the Golden Grizzlies in scoring with 13 points, and sophomore
Aaliyah McQueen set a career high with 12 points on 5-8 shooting, including 2-4 from deep.
Luchenbach got off to a quick start, hitting consecutive layups and scoring five points as Oakland took the lead midway through the first, 10-9.
Alona Blackwell hit a three and had two rebounds in the early action.
Following some early misses, both teams started hitting shots later in the first. Oakland and Marshall both went on a 4-5 stretch from the floor and closed out the first converting most looks. Luchenbach was up to seven points on 3-3 shooting.
After one quarter, Oakland led 22-17. McQueen led Oakland with eight points, including perfect 2-2 shooting from deep. Luchenbach was still an efficient 3-4 shooting with seven points.
Marshall went on a small run to begin the second, but back-to-back threes from
Lamariyee Williams and
Breanne Beatty gave Oakland the lead right back. Beatty was filling up the stat sheet early, grabbing four rebounds and two assists to go along with the early three.
McQueen added to a career night, hitting 4-6 shots in the first half for 10 points. The 10 points set a career high for the sophomore, and the 2-3 threes tied her career high in threes set against UIC.
At the half, Oakland led 38-37 after Williams hit her third and fourth consecutive free throw. Luchenbach was up to nine points and Williams had seven.
Oakland was 5-11 from long range and 5-5 from the free throw line. They held the rebounding advantage 21-16 at halftime, including six offensive rebounds. The Golden Grizzlies also held the assist advantage 9-5.
One advantage Marshall held was turnovers, 8-3. Coming into the game, the Thundering Herd were the 11th best team in turnovers in the country. Marshall's leading scorer on the season, Savannah Wheeler, was doing most of the damage for them, scoring 19 of The Thundering Herd's 37 first-half points.
Wheeler scored six unanswered to give Marshall a five-point lead before a timeout. Both teams slowed down offensively after halftime. The Thundering Herd stretched their lead to 14 with two minutes remaining in the third. They held the same lead at the end of the third. 58-44 after a 21-6 third quarter.
Marshall continued their offensive success into the fourth, with Wheeler eventually reaching 40 points. The Golden Grizzlies shooting percentages dropped in the second half, and the team had multiple scoring droughts.
The Golden Grizzlies fell to 4-7 overall after the 21-point loss. They return to conference play against Milwaukee on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m.
