OAKLAND WOMEN LEAD THE WAY AFTER DAY ONE OF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

HL Day 1

RESULTS


YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –
The Oakland women's track team sits in first place with 69 points after day one of the Horizon League Indoor Championships, while the men's squad finished the day in fifth from the Watson & Tressel Training Center.
 
In the opening event of the 2020 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships, sophomore Emily Schaub was the runner-up in the pentathlon with a score of 3,320.
 
Olivia Kane defended her title in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.80m. Megan Kusler had a strong showing for the Golden Grizzlies, placing third, with a mark of 3.70m
 
In the long jump, Oakland had two competitors on the women's side finish 10th or better. Paige Sanders finished fourth (5.72m), while Briana Walker placed 10th (5.47m). In the men's competition, the Golden Grizzlies had three top-10 finishers, led by Zach Stadnika who finished third (7.27m). Sophomores Chase Novak (6.95m) and Alex Hugh-Plott (6.52m) finished eighth and ninth respectively.
 
Gabby Cyriax was the champion of the women's weight throw with a 17.23m toss. Junior Kyle Piotrovsky led the Golden Grizzlies on the men's side with a toss of 14.86m, good for eighth place.
 
The women's 5,000 meter was a photo finish with Katelyn Murphy of IUPUI crossing the line in 16:55.40 to win just .06 seconds ahead of Megan Nichols. Teammate Rachel Kempf finished fifth (17:37.82). Both Nichols and Kempf crossed the finish line in personal best times. On the men's side, senior Connor Wuori was the lone Golden Grizzly in the race, placing sixth in 15:03.71.
 
The distance medley relay closed out the evening with the women's squad taking the top spot and crossing the line in 12:09.11. 
 
The Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships will conclude on Sunday, March 1 with the heptathlon starting at 9 a.m. Streaming for finals will start at 12:55 p.m. on ESPN3.
