RESULTS
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams remain on top after day three of the Horizon League Championships, as the men finished the day with 579 points, and the women tallied 642.5 points Friday from the Oakland Aquatic Center.
The Golden Grizzlies started the night with the 100 butterfly, as senior
Grace Shinske recorded her first top finish of the night in the time of 53.45.
Susan LaGrand clocked a 53.58, good for second place.
In the men's 100 butterfly, Oakland took second and third, with
Mack Flowers (47.08) and
Colton Phelps (47.25) finishing respectively.
In both the men's and women's 400 IM, the freshmen dominated for the Golden Grizzlies as
Kiera Brough took the top time (4:21.73), with teammates
Rachel Boodt (4:26.59) and
Sonya Zubenko (4:28.97) finishing third and fifth respectively.
Andrew Bernsdorf led the way for the Golden Grizzlies, finishing in second in 3:52.82. Fellow freshman
Ian Allen (5:56.18) finished fifth, and
Michael VanCoppenolle (4:03.82) took eighth.
Emily Aycock was another consistent force for Oakland, as the freshman was the only swimmer to clock a time under 1:50, placing first in 1:49.63.
On the men's side, Oakland finished one, two, three, led by
Rudy Aguilar (1:36.79),
Danylo Hrebelnyi (1:37.44) and
Ben Davis (1:37.73).
Junior
Sydney McDowell recorded her first individual top finish on the night in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.81, while teammate
Taylor Bailey finished in third, clocking a 1:02.45.
First and second place on the men's side went to Oakland as
Ryan Geheb took the top spot (53.25).
Christian Bart was not far behind, placing second in 53.29.
In 2018 Shinske set the Horizon League record in the 100 back (53.73), on Friday the senior surpassed her previous record touching the wall in 53.66.
In the men's 100 back,
Marko Khotynetskyi took second place (47.48), while Will Barton finished third, and William Gayne placed fifth.
In the one-meter diving competition, Turchi finished in fourth place with a score of 247.55.
Oakland's 400 medley relay teams dominated to close out the night, as both the men's and women's squads placed first. The women's team of Shinske, McDowell, Colwell and LaGrand set a school, pool and league record clocking a 3:38.59. The previous record (3:39.45) was set a season ago by the same squad.
Khotynetskyi. Geheb, Flowers and
Christian Bart entered the final relay as the top team, and proved why, as the Golden Grizzlies took the top spot, edging Cleveland State, in 3:10.91.
