OAKLAND SOFTBALL SPLITS PAIR ON DAY TWO OF UPSTATE CLASSIC

Oakland University softball rebounded from an earlier loss to USC-Upstate with a 5-2 victory over Massachusetts.

ROCHESTER, Michigan - Freshman Sydney Campbell picked up her second win in the circle against Massachusetts, 5-2, after Oakland University softball dropped its first matchup of the day, 5-0, to USC-Upstate at the Upstate Classic in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Junior Shannon Carr had a team-high three hits on the day, tallying an RBI and a run. Three fellow Golden Grizzlies had multi-hit days: sophomore Lauren Griffith, r-sophomore Cammie Brummitt and senior Rachel Zerona. Brummitt had a team-high two runs.

Campbell got the ball to start in game two. The LaGrange, Ohio, native threw her second-straight complete game, striking out five batters and limiting the Minutewomen to two hits.

In the nightcap, Oakland wasted no time in jumping out to a lead. With two out and runners on first and third, sophomore Kayla Gibson singled up the middle to bring home Carr. Following a Griffith single, freshman Jen Krizka watched ball four cross the plate to bring home a second tally in the opening frame.

UMass responded in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a wild pitch with a runner on third coming home to score.

The Golden Grizzlies' bats answered and then some in the bottom of the inning, though, starting with a Brummitt double down the left field line. Griffith brought her teammate around with a double of her own to the left side. A fourth and fifth tally was added with the bases loaded and Carr at the plate. The Sterling Heights, Michigan, native found a hole on the right side of the defense to score freshman Marisa Muglia and sophomore Arieanna Grammatico

Junior Lauryn DeBono started in the circle to start the day against USC-Upstate. DeBono went 2.1 innings - giving up three earned runs on three hits - before junior Chelsea Wiggins came in for the final 3.2 frames. Wiggins struck out two hitters while surrendering two hits.

Sophomore Sidney Rayba led the Golden Grizzlies at the plate in game one against the Spartans, going 1-of-2 with a double in the fifth. Carr, r-sophomore Madison Jones and Zerona recorded hits against USC-Upstate's Celina Sullivan. Sullivan went 6.1 innings, striking out seven Golden Grizzlies.

The Spartans opened the scoring with two in the second. An error to start the third set the tone for the inning. USC-Upstate put up three runs before a pop up to first base retired the side.

Oakland concludes the Upstate Classic on Sunday, February 16, against Maryland Eastern Shore. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
