DISTANCE CREW SHINES AT SVSU OPEN

After taking nearly a month off for the holidays, the Oakland track and field teams were back in action at the Saginaw Valley State Open this afternoon with a smaller squad than they're used to. The distance squad racked up many of Oakland's highlights for the day as the women tallied the top five of six spots in the 3000m with Megan Nichols coming in first with a time of 10:19.77. Heather Czarnecki placed second, Rachel Kempf third and Courtney Jarema and Taylor Conner finished fifth and sixth respectively.
 
Maddi Leigh won the mile heat with a time of 5:09.52 and Olivia Rice picked up a ninth place finish.
 
The Oakland 3000m men's crew also placed high as they went first through fourth place with Connor Wuori coming out on top with a time of 8:45.67. Shawn Slater placed second, Zach Pettinga third and Nathaniel Langlie finished in fourth place.
 
Eddie Harrell III won the men's 800m (2:02.28) while Landon Melling clocked in a fourth place finish. Nate Corcoran-Miller placed runner-up in the men's mile with a time of 4:31.13 while Harrell III placed third and Thomas Polak and Melling placed seventh and eighth.
 
Olivia Kane tied for first in pole vault, clearing a height of 12 ft., 4.5 in. and Kyle Piotrovsky won the men's shot put by a mark of 47 ft., 9.75 in. Piotrovsky also placed fifth in the weight throw.
 
Sheldon Drake picked up a first place win in the 60m dash (6.98) while Napoleon Outlaw placed runner-up. The Oakland men dominated the 200m as they claimed the top five of six spots with Malcolm McIntyre leading the way and picking up the first place finish (21.87). Marcus Nellum placed second, Napoleon Outlaw third, Sheldon Drake fourth and Johnathon Sholl sixth.
 
In addition, Marcus Nellum picked up the first place finish in the 60m hurdles.
 
Marthea Van Scott placed runner-up in the women's 60m dash with a time of 7.89 while Cassidy Newburg placed third. Newburg also placed runner-up in the 200m (25.97)
 
Robin Lefevere picked up a second place finish in the 400m (1.00.99) while Meghan Earles placed fourth.
 
The Golden Grizzlies will continue competition Friday, Jan. 17 at the Grand Valley Bill Clinger Meet beginning at 2:45 p.m.
