INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland University Athletics was selected as one of three Horizon League institutions to pilot the newly-launched ESPN+ Network announced by the Horizon League on Tuesday.
Continuing its longstanding partnership with ESPN, the Horizon League will usher in ESPN's innovative direct-to-consumer, over-the-top streaming service, ESPN+, by airing its spring sports championships on the newly-launched platform.
"As our partner ESPN continues to evolve their overall platforms, ESPN+ will be the next generation of viewing for fans," said Oakland Interim Director of Athletics Padraic McMeel. "With a concept of 'TV Everywhere' we believe that not only will our fans be able to watch the Oakland Golden Grizzlies compete, they will have access to so much more content. We are excited to participate in the pilot program with the Horizon League and hope our fans will continue to enjoy watching the Golden Grizzlies compete."
As an integrated part of a completely redesigned ESPN App, and also via ESPN.com, ESPN+ subscribers will receive thousands of live sporting events, original shows and films, and an exclusive on-demand video library.
"First off you have to give the Horizon League credit for once again being on the forefront in terms of content delivery," said Director of Broadcasting Neal Ruhl. "Their longstanding relationship with ESPN puts our entire league in a great position to be on the cutting edge. Secondly, this is a testament to the quality of content the Oakland Golden Grizzlies deliver across all platforms. The fact ESPN directly reached out for us to be involved with this historic endeavor by the 'Worldwide Leader in Sports' is something our entire production crew and fan base should be very proud of."
By streaming on ESPN+, Oakland will join the ranks of select collegiate institutions across the NCAA in addition to Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, the PGA Tour events and matches from Grand Slam Tennis.
For just $4.99 per month, fans can gain access to ESPN+, the first-ever multi-sports, direct-to-consumer premium subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company's Direct-to-Consumer and international group, in partnership with ESPN.
Authenticated live streaming of ESPN's U.S. networks - including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, and ESPNEWS - will continue to be available via "TV Everywhere" within the ESPN App and on ESPN.com through an affiliated pay TV subscription.
In addition to the Horizon League airing its spring sports championships on the exciting new platform, Oakland will be piloting some of their regular-season baseball content through the service. For a listing of upcoming Horizon League broadcasts, click here.
