MOREHEAD, Ky. - Devon Smith hit a RBI single while Erin Kownacki went the distance with three strikeouts as Oakland came up short against Akron falling 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on the first day of competition at the Morehead State Tournament.

Jamie Squires went 2-for-3 with Brittney Miller and Kelsie Swanson each recording a hit.

After allowing a two-run home run in the first, Kownacki held Akron scoreless until the sixth inning where the zips took a 3-0 lead off a RBI single.

Oakland responded in the bottom half with a double from Mikayela Marciniak followed by Smith's single to drive in pinch runner Lauren Mead pulling the Golden Grizzlies with two runs at 3-1.

The Golden Grizzlies were scheduled to also play host Morehead State but the game was cancelled due to field conditions. Oakland will play a doubleheader against MSU on Sunday, March 19 at noon and 2 p.m.
