> Oakland welcomes two new assistant coaches in Tony Jones and Mychal Covington. Jones has close to 20 years of collegiate coaching experience at Auburn, Buffalo, Tennessee, Toledo and Milwaukee. Newman appeared in 31 games for George Mason last season and ranked third on the Patriots in three-pointers made (29). He will sit out this year due to NCAA transfer rules. Palmer averaged seven points and five rebounds per game while shooting 73 percent from the field and appearing in 31 games for McLennan Community College (Texas).

> For the first time as a member of the Horizon League, the Oakland men's basketball team was picked as the league favorite receiving 31 of 47 first-place votes in the league's preseason poll.

> Oakland landed the most players on the preseason all-league teams with Jalen Hayes and Martez Walker being named to the first team and Kendrick Nunn being selected to the second team.

> Oakland's Brad Brechting suffered a broken toe (fifth metatarsal) in his left foot during practice and had surgery on Oct. 23. He is expected to miss approximately 12 weeks.
