FANS SELECT TOP 20 NOMINEES FOR OAKLAND BASKETBALL HALF-CENTURY TEAM

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The final votes have been made by the fans and the top 20 nominees have been selected for the Oakland Men's Basketball Half-Century Team, announced on Wednesday. A committee made up of faculty, staff, alums and a former player will vote on the top 10, which will be announced at halftime of the WinterFest game versus Green Bay on Friday, Jan. 27th. All 50 nominees will be recognized on the floor, before announcing the top 10.

Listed alphabetically

Travis Bader

  • NCAA career record holder in 3-pointers made (504) and 3-pointers attempted (1,246)
  • Recipient of Coleman Award, given to Horizon League's top senior student-athlete
  • Ranks No. 2 in school history with 2,351 career points

Keith Benson

  • Lou Henson Award winner in 2010, given to the country's top mid-major player
  • Named Summit League Player of the Year (2010, '11) and Defensive Player of the Year (2011)
  • Just the 2nd player in Summit League & school history to surpass 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds

Scott Bittinger

  • Became Oakland's first-ever All-American in 1988
  • Named GLIAC Player of the Year in 1988
  • Inducted into Hall of Honor in 1994

Brad Buddenborg

  • Broke school record with career FT percentage of .892 (Currently ranks 3rd)
  • No. 11 in program history with 1,702 career points scored
  • Two-time All-Mid-Con team selection (2000, '02)

Dan Champagne

  • School record holder in FG percentage (.624)
  • No. 10 on all-time scoring list with 1,721 points
  • All-Mid-Con performer and ranks in top 10 in games, games started, minutes played, FG made, scoring, FG percentage and offensive rebounds

Mychal Covington

  • Finished 8th in the country with 7.1 assists per game in 2001-02 (No. 6 in single-season school history)
  • Ranks 5th all-time in program history with 514 assists (4th in D1 history)
  • Helped lead team to Mid-Con regular season title in 1999-00 (1st year of D1)

Kay Felder

  • Named Associated Press All-America Third Team in 2016
  • Horizon League Player of the Year in 2016, Mid-Major All-American, two-time All-Horizon League
  • Led the NCAA in assists per game (9.3) and 4th in scoring (24.4 per game)

Brian Gregory

  • Academic All-American and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship recipient
  • School record holder in career assists (905) and assists per game (10.8)
  • Inducted into Hall of Honor in 1997

Reggie Hamilton

  • Led the country in scoring (26.2) in 2011-12
  • Broke the single-season school record with 942 points
  • Led Golden Grizzlies to 2011 NCAA tournament and scored 25 points against No. 8 Texas in 85-81 loss

Mike Helms

  • Finished 3rd in the NCAA with 26.9 points per game, 2nd in school history
  • Scored 2,314 points and stands 3rd on all-time scoring list
  • First-ever Division I All-American in 2003, Conference MVP and Player of the Year and three-time All-Mid-Con

John Henderson

  • No. 2 all-time in 3-point FG percentage (.475)
  • Scored 1,435 points and currently ranks No. 21 on all-time scoring list
  • Named All-GLIAC first team in 1989

Max Hooper

  • Only player in NCAA history with at least 200 FG attempts to not attempt a 2-pointer, going 117-for-257 (.455)
  • Horizon League Sixth Man of the Year in 2016
  • CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

Johnathon Jones

  • Broke all-time Summit League record in assists (814)
  • Led NCAA with 8.1 assists per game in 2008-09
  • First player in program history to surpass 1,300 points and 800 assists

Erik Kangas

  • Broke the single-season Summit League record with 135 3-pointers made
  • Two-time All-Summit League and All-Tournament Team member
  • Scored 1,467 points over his final 3 seasons, finishing 18th all-time (1,540)

Kevin Kovach

  • All-American in 1997
  • Two-time All-GLIAC first team selection
  • Inducted into Hall of Honor in 2004

Rawle Marshall

  • Named Mid-Con Tournament MVP after leading Oakland to first-ever D1 NCAA tournament in 2005
  • First-ever player to compete in NBA (Dallas, Indiana)
  • Scored 1,671 points in 3 seasons at Oakland (14th all-time)

Ty McGregor

  • Ranks 29th on all-time scoring list with 1,144 points
  • Named to the GLIAC All-Defensive Team in 1993 and 1994
  • Finished 7th all-time with 386 assists

Carvin Melson

  • NCAA District 4 All-Star and NBA Coaches Bulletin All-American
  • School record holder with 2,408 points and 1,204 rebounds
  • Inducted into Hall of Honor in 1984

Derick Nelson

  • Named Summit League Tournament MVP after scoring career-high 36 points in title game vs. IUPUI (3/9/10)
  • Mid-Major Defensive All-American by CollegeInsider.com
  • Became the 2nd player in D1 history to surpass 1,000 points and 600 rebounds

Eric Taylor

  • Two-time All-American (1991, '92)
  • GLIAC Player of the Year and three-time all-league performer
  • Inducted into Hall of Honor in 2004

Drew Valentine

  • Played the 2nd-most games in school history at 136
  • Finished 4th all-time in defensive rebounds (480) and 8th in offensive rebounds (232)
  • All-Summit League in final season
