BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Oakland University point guard Kay Felder, a 5-foot-9 Detroit native, was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the 54th overall pick in the second round of Thursday's NBA Draft and was later traded to the world champion Cleveland Cavaliers for cash considerations.
Felder becomes only the second Oakland player in program history to be drafted to the NBA, as Keith Benson was selected 48th overall in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He also becomes the first Horizon League player chosen since Green Bay's Alec Brown was taken 50th overall to the Phoenix Suns in 2014.
The Horizon League Player of the Year earned Associated Press and Sporting News All-American Third Team honors after leading the nation in assists with 9.3 and finished fourth in scoring at 24.4 points per game. He was named a finalist for both the John R. Wooden Award and the Bob Cousy Award. Felder also broke the Horizon League single-season record for most Player of the Week honors this year with seven. In four games this season against Power-5 schools, he averaged 32.0 points, 6.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds including scoring 37 points with nine assists versus then-no. 1 Michigan State.
Felder set the Horizon League career (788) and single-season record (324) for assists this past season. He ranks ninth on Oakland's all-time scoring list with 1,765 points in 101 career games with the Golden Grizzlies. He also has the program's only two triple-doubles, the first in 2013 at Detroit and the second this season during the semifinals of the Vegas 16 against East Tennessee State.
