INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland's Karine Celis has been named the Horizon League Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced the league office on Tuesday. The senior led the Golden Grizzlies to a perfect 2-0 record over the weekend by winning all four of her matches.
Celis began the weekend with a 7-6 (2) win in No. 2 doubles with partner Juliana Guevara followed by a grueling 7-5, 7-6 (15-13) victory in No. 3 singles as Oakland defeated Valparaiso, 7-0, on Saturday. The next day, she would lead the Golden Grizzlies to an upset win over previously undefeated in league play UIC, 4-3, on Senior Day. Celis won No. 2 doubles, 6-2, and then earned the match-deciding point with a come-from-behind victory in No. 3 singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Golden Grizzlies will play their final Horizon League match of the season on Saturday against Metro Series rival Detroit on the road at the Titans Tennis Courts. The winner of the match will guarantee themselves a spot in the Horizon League Championship April 29-May 1 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
