DORSEY-WALKER NAMED 2017 ALLSTATE GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE

Nov. 30, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland's Sherron Dorsey-Walker of the men's basketball team has been named a 2017 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches Good Works nominee the NABC announced Wednesday.

"I am truly honored to be selected as a nominee for the Allstate good works team," said Dorsey-Walker. "I take pride in volunteering time to help better our communities. Growing up I had many mentors that I looked up to, so I feel it is my duty to help others and share some of the things that helped me get to this point in my life."

This respected award honors an outstanding group of student-athletes who represent the sport's finest in the areas of community service and leadership among their peers.

"The positive impact that student-athletes are making on college campuses and communities around the world can sometimes go unnoticed," said Thomas Clarkson, president of the west territory for Allstate Insurance Company and a member of the 2017 NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams selection panels. "Allstate is a proud supporter of NCAA college basketball and takes immense pride in working with the NABC and WBCA to recognize players who continue to make giving back a priority and inspire future generations of athletes."

Dorsey-Walker has made an impact both on and off the court during his time with the Golden Grizzlies. The 6-foot-4 transfer guard from Iowa State has started all seven games this season and is averaging 11.6 points per game and 5.3 rebounds. The Detroit native scored a career-high 23 points against Nevada in the Great Alaska Shootout Tournament.

In addition to his efforts on the court, Dorsey-Walker has volunteered at a number of local organizations around the Rochester community. Some of the community service initiatives he has participated in include ARISE Clean Up Detroit, local festivals and fairs, trick or suite for Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan, Auburn Elementary literacy fun nights, literacy night at Avondale, family reading night at Long Meadow Elementary and teaching basketball fundamentals at the area Boys and Girls Club.

Dorsey Walker was his high school class valedictorian and currently boasts a 3.34 GPA as an integrative studies major.

In its fifth year, the Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams recognize players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. From establishing nonprofits that provide youth with the necessary tools to become leaders of tomorrow, to raising awareness around pertinent issues that could save lives, these student-athletes exhibit leadership skills both on and off the court.
