ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland women's golf team will begin the 2015-16 season this weekend at the 50th annual Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State, Sunday and Monday at Weibring Golf Club (par 72, 6,070 yards) in Normal, Ill. The 54-hole tournament will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday with 36 holes followed by the final round being played on Monday.
Reigning Horizon League Golfer and Freshman of the Year Elle Nichols returns for her sophomore campaign as she finished last season with a 76.79 stroke average, second-best single-season average in school history. She also earned All-Tournament honors at the league championship with a share of sixth place. Senior Alyssa Albright was an All-Horizon League and Academic All-League selection last season after ranking sixth in the Horizon League with a 78.79 stroke average.
Junior Morgan Smith finished runner-up at the league championship last season, the best finish by an individual in school history, while sophomore Fiona Schmidt played in six tournaments last season highlighted by a tie for fourth at the IPFW Invitational. Freshman Maddelyn Zack is competing in her first collegiate event.
Head coach Alyssa Gaudio begins her first full season with the Golden Grizzlies as she was hired on Nov. 22, 2014. She helped guide Oakland to a runner-up finish at the Horizon League Championship as the team improved 13 shots from the previous year's score. Under Gaudio, the team also broke the school's 54-hole school record.

The Golden Grizzlies continue the fall season with two more tournaments on the road before hosting the second annual Golden Grizzlies Invitational at Katke-Cousins Golf Course Sept. 28-29. Oakland concludes the fall season at the Dayton Fall invitational Oct. 19-20.
Oakland will return to action for the spring season on Feb. 8-9 for the BGSU Match Play in Florida. The Golden Grizzlies will also travel to Tennessee, Texas and Indiana before playing in the Horizon League Championship April 22-24.
