NEW YORK ââ'¬" Former Oakland men's basketball standout Travis Bader helped Overseas Elite win The Basketball Tournament held at Fordham University on Sunday. Overseas Elite defeated Team 23, 67-65, to claim the $1 million grand prize in front of a national television audience on ESPN.
"It's unreal to think that a group of guys who have never met each other, played together, or even practiced together were able to win such a competitive tournament," said Bader. "We had a very talented group of guys and I'm happy I was able to represent Oakland University throughout The Basketball Tournament and head into next season on a strong note."
Bader, the NCAA career 3-point leader, joined the team on July 10, arriving in Atlanta less than an hour before the team's first game. Overseas Elite had only four players on the roster before he joined. Bader went 12-for-27 from behind the arc prior to the championship game during the tournament.
Former Oakland basketball player Shane Lawal also joined Overseas Elite prior to the semifinal matchup against Team City of Gods. Lawal, who played for the Golden Grizzlies from 2005-08, scored four points with three rebounds in the semifinal game.
