FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Elle Nichols shot 1-over-par 72 and Morgan Smith carded a 75 to lead the Oakland women's golf team to a 13-shot improvement in the final round and finished in third place at the IPFW Spring Classic with an overall score of 617 (+49) on Monday at Pine Valley Country Club (Par 71, 6,003 yards). Fiona Schmidt finished in a tie for fourth place as an individual with a score of 150 (+8).

"To improve 13 shots and shoot the second lowest score of the day is a great accomplishment," said first-year head coach Alyssa Gaudio. "It was a good preview for the Horizon League Championship and a good taste of the competition we're going to face."

Nichols, a freshman from Okemos, Mich., fired her second-lowest score of the season with her final round 72. She posted an overall score of 149, four shots off her 36-hole career best, to finish in a tie for second place. Alyssa Albright and Marianna Stepp each recorded an overall score of 155 (+13) to finish in a tie for 12th place.

Indianapolis won the tournament with an overall score of 600 (+32), 16 shots ahead of Youngstown State (616, +48). The Golden Grizzlies finished one shot behind the Horizon League's top ranked team.

The Golden Grizzlies will compete in the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, April 11-12, on Stone Ridge Golf Club.
