ROCHESTER, Mich. - Ian Yetsko hit a grand slam and scored two runs, while Collin Gee earned a quality start as the Oakland baseball team (6-22) won its home opener over Western Michigan (13-19), 8-6, on Wednesday from the Oakland Baseball Field. The Golden Grizzlies have won three of their last four home openers.
Gee tossed 6.0 innings, allowing three runs with two strikeouts to lead an Oakland pitching staff that allowed a total of five hits on the day. Nate Schweers earned his first collegiate win throwing 1.1 innings in relief allowing one run with one strikeout. Chris Van Dyke collected his first career save tallying the final three outs without giving up a run.
With the game tied 5-5 in the seventh inning, Brett Impemba would break the game open with a RBI-single to right field followed by Tyler Pagano driving in the game-winning runs with a double down the left-field line to give Oakland a 8-5 lead.
The Golden Grizzlies took a 5-1 advantage in the fifth inning as Yetsko hit a home run with the bases loaded deep to center field for his second long ball of the season. Western Michigan tied the score in the top of the seventh led by a three-run, pinch-hit home run by Tanner Allison.
WMU's Derek Schneider suffered the loss allowing three unearned runs in 0.2 innings in relief.
Oakland will continue its homestand this weekend with a three-game Horizon League series against Wright State starting on Friday at 3 p.m. from the Oakland Baseball Field.
